at that age cute velcro shoes will be getting harder to find. If he is 7 that is way old enough to learn how to tie, take some time and teach him.
Hi moms -
Im looking for some back to school shoes for my 7 year old boy. He doesn't know how to tie his shoes yet... so that is an issue. In the past he has always worn the skecher light up shoes, but Im thinking we should 'graduate' from these shoes. I know you have some good advice, brands, specific shoes, and or places to shop. Thanks.

What about Vans, the slip on ones
Geox tennis shoes they are about 35 dollars on sale at Nordstrom. Nordstrom shoe sale for kids starts July 20th best prices and the sales people really know how to it kids!
Teach him to tie shoes, Use two different color shoelaces and let him practice.
You could always go with "skater" type shoes like DC's or something that you can tie once yourself and then all he has to do is slip his foot in and out?
That is what we did for awhile until my boys learned to tie their own laces...but IMO, 7 is the perfect age to teach him...I know it will seem really hard for him to get at first but at this age it suddenly just clicks for them and they get it. I bet you if you took a couple days in a row this summer he would be a pro WAY before school starts up again and then your possibilities of types of shoes is endless!
It's time to teach him how to tie his shoes. Unless he's LD, he should know. Kids will pick on him if you let him go much longer without learning.
Buy him regular shoes and teach him. If he runs around a lot, don't buy him Vans or DC's...they slip off. Get him some New Balance or Asics. Regular shoes that will stay on his feet on the playground.
I second Lattegirl's suggestion for the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. If your son isn't ready to graduate from light-ups, there is a cool pair of Stride Rite Jedi light saber (velcro) shoes on sale for $37. I'm planning to get these for my four year old. There are also some cool looking suede Puma and Adidas shoes (also velcro) on sale for $25 - $30. Geox goes are on sale for $45, but I'm still not willing to pay that much for kid shoes. There is always Nordstrom Rack too. Good luck!
Jut get shoes that have Velcro on it.
Pay Less Shoe store has lots.
Or, just get shoe laces that are those "springy" coiled types. It does not have to be tied.
LOTS of kids in my daughter's class has those. And these are 4th grade kids. It is just "cool" looking and they don't have to tie it.
We really like the Merrell's slip-ons for our kiddo at REI (or you could get them at Zappos; note that they do run a little narrow). They are a bit more expensive--about $50, but worth it, from my point of view. They hold up well; my son got his last Sept or so and just wore through the bottoms yesterday.
You can also sometimes find them in good condition at resale shops/online.
We just usually spend our money at Walmart. Kids go through shoes so why pay more than $10-$15 for a pair that will wear out just as soon as the pricier ones.
I like the slip on Vans, but not the real Vans, the cheaper versions, like from Old Navy...
My friend's son is entering 2nd grade and he doesn't really tie his shoes either. I know she gets his shoes at Stride Rite. They have some name brand ones and apparently velcro ones or something that works for him!
Stride Rite has velcro shoes that size.
