This may be a silly question, but I need help!!! I need a good idea for storage of my kids shoes! They routinely put their shoes on/off at the front door, but can't find a way to keep them contained and easy for them to clean up. I have tried bins, but shoes get lost, etc. I have also tried an over the door hanger on my coat closet, but it doesn't hold enough and they can't reach the ones on top. Granted I think they have too many shoes, but between tennies, flip flops, sandals, boots, etc........ I don't have a mud room or a very big entry way. Any suggestions??

What can I do next?

For my home daycare, I have a 9 cube storage cubby thing from Target. Then we bought cheap "runner" carpet from Menards (3 linear feet was about $7/8 bucks). Then we cut the runner carpet into perfect squares to fit in the cubby cubes (to catch dirt and rain, snow). We have extra carpet pieces to change out when they get too gross. I shake them every few days outside. This is one thing potential clients and current ones mention they liek aobut my place. Its clean and organized...and for current ones..their kids ask where is their "spot" at home to put stuff! LOL I have very well anchored and permanent coat hooks behind a door in the entry (sort of useless space otherwise) for kids coats as well (2 rows..upper and lower). Not sure if this works...

Hubby went a step further and bought "feet/legs" from Ikea to make it up off the floor. This is in our small entry way along the wall. It works great for the kids to put boots, shoes, papers, whatever they need to take home. It would be great in a home environment as well with a few kids. Its tall and with the legs on it, looks like a piece of furniture..not jsut a junky thing. We have about $50 into it. Wish I could post a pic.

If you had certain cubbys for each child..depending on how many kids you have or family members...one for lunch bags, one for shoes , one for hats and mittens.

My family of 3..our stuff goes in the closet...overflow shoes..seasonal or whatever, goes in our own bedroom closets or in storage areas. But the cubby system would be fantastic for young kids and I wish I always had it for my daycare and when my daughter was little.

Here is the one we have...but it was on sale for $40 and we did not put the backings on it..its just anchored to our wall. The IKEA legs we added are stainless steel (our house is all greys and jewel tones..no browns/tans/earthy colors).

Good luck!

I always told the kids to put shoes by the front door. It looked like a garbage pile of shoes! Now they have plastic underbed storage bins. Every day after school, 1st thing they have to go put shoes in those underbed drawers and change into play clothes. At night, I set out an outfit and pair of shoes with each backpack, so if a shoe is lost or didn't make it into the bin I can take care of it right then.
I have 2 of these stacked on top of each other in my closet for mine.

I used to have them in a dark color by the front door as shoe storage and as a side table for keys and such

We have a cabinet with doors by the front door. That's where they throw them when we come in. It's nothing fancy, three shelves and a door. For the basic storage I went through everything with my son and nothing seemed to work. I finally put a plastic milk crate in his closet and we throw them in there. He has to dig a bit to find matching pairs sometimes, but it works. And they all fit, he seems to have a lot of shoes for a little boy. This box has been the only system that he will consistently use and not lose shoes. My daughter now has one in her closet as well.

We could too many shoes by the back door too, so we store the regularly used ones on a bookshelf (ikea or pier one) on the landing going down to the basement, and I purge them periodically (non-seasonal, dressy, etc.) so they sometimes have to look in their bedroom closets for some pairs or on other shelves in the basement. Shoes/boots not in regular rotation go on shelves in the furnace room.
