She Won't Take a Sippy Cup!

Well, I am not sure what the biggest problem is. My 10 month old baby girl is really attached to breastfeeding. She is eating baby food and does well with it, so she nurses less. However, she will not take any water from a bottle or sippy cup and no juice from a cup. I plan to nurse until 1yr. I am a working mother, so her latest is not taking a bottle at all when I am gone. I work nights so it isn't a big deal, she just doesn't eat in the middle of the night when I am not here. My husband and I are worried that she is not getting enough fluids, she wakes with a dry diaper in the mornings. Do you ladies have any suggestions. Also, when I am here and she cries to eat in the middle of the night, should I still feed her? Should she be sleeping completly through the night? I think with my first one she stopped with the midnight feeding befor now. HELP!

So What Happened?

Thanks so much to all of those that have replied. My little one has gone 2 nights without me going in to feed her. She woke for only like 10mins and went right back to sleep. I purchased the Nuby cup and tried it only once so far. She took 2oz of breastmilk out of it. She mostly chewed on the spout, but did get down 2oz. I think we are on the right track! Thanks so much moms! The knowledge we all have together is just amazing!

My son loves to drink out of a cup with a straw. He has a cup we got from Chuck E Cheeses with a bendy straw and he loves it - plus the lid screws on so it doesn't spill as easily (but it does spill). It's just something different and fun. My son thinks it is a treat to drink with a straw. :-)
I'll also forward to you a resonse I sent to someone else about breastfeeding. It's tough deciding when your child doesn't need to be breastfeed at night. I'm sure I did it too long - but I truly enjoyed that quiet time with my boy. Although, I REALLY missed my sleep!!!

My son refused to take breastmilk in a sippy cup but started taking water when he was about 8 months. I still had to give breastmilk with a bottle when I was at work. Then, we went to whole milk, and I wouldn't put it in a bottle. I went straight to the sippy cup, and he took to it with no problem. Unfortunately he stopped nursing about a two weeks later on his 1 year birthday. It will happen when she's ready. Sometimes my son still wanted to nurse in the early early morning, but it's because our milk goes to almost skim milk after that long. I'm sure you can tell the difference in thickness. It's not as filling to her. You may want to make sure she's getting full at dinner (maybe even give her a little oatmeal as a dessert?) I think that's what we did, and then I nursed before bed time.

Good luck with it.

S.,
We also LOVE the Nuby cups!!! Our problem is now weaning our 2 yr old from her Nubys!!!lol If you can't get her to try anything else, there are "bottles" by Adri that are called breast bottle nursers. They are shaped like a breast and are supossed to be great for breastfed babies. I bought several before the birth of our 2 yr old b/c my 14 yr old would not take a bottle or sippy at all--EVER! It turned out that we didn't need them with the second child but I was prepared with those crazy things!
Good Luck!

My 8 month old was not kean on the sippy either; therefore, I offered her a cup with a straw. I hold the straw between my index finger and thumb about a half inch to inch from the top; this way she doesn't put too much of the straw in her mouth and gag or poke the roof of her mouth. Be sure to put on a bib because if your daughter takes too big of a drink a large portion of the juice will come right back out.

My son didn't want anything to do with a sippy cup for a while, but he loved drinking out of those water bottles that have pop-up lids. You can barely open the lid so it doesn't come out too fast.

You might to try the Nuby Flip it leak proof which my youngest loved and still does. He wasn't too keen on the sippy cups at all. We only breast fed for a short period because I wasn't producing enough but when we did whole milk we started off w/the bottle and gradually put it the Nuby cup and started with the first AM bottle and so fourth.

Good Luck, It takes time.
Hope this helps.

My daughter did not want to take a sippy cup either. I took the spillproof inserts out of the cup and put what she was familar with being breastmilk in them. She eventually started to take the cup and I still have the inserts out of them. She never did well with those Nuby cups she would just get drenched with those cups. She is now 15 months and will take a cup with juice, water or breastmilk in them.

Despite my best efforts at offering a sippy at 6 or 8 months old, neither of mine took to it well until about 11 1/2 months. Also, the ones we like the best are the "old fashioned" tupperware style ones (they are not spill-proof, but it's easier for the kids to drink out of them) and the Take 'n' Toss brand sippys -- no valve to mess with and we wash and re-use for months before tossing. My son just turned 2 and we've gone through 2 packages (they come in packs of 6) since he turned 1.

My only advice on the sippy cup thing is to try different sippy cups until you find one that works for you. A friend of mine has one for her daughter that looks like a bottle, still (she's 3), but it isn't. But it has the nipple, etc. She might like that okay.

As far as waking in the middle of the night to feed, if she's 10 months old, she doesn't need it. She's old enough to sleep through the night by now. Feeding in the middle of the night for a 10-month-old is out of habit, not necessity. But again - it depends on your beliefs and what your parenting style is. We are expecting twin girls in 3 weeks and we are doing the baby wise program (as we did with our daughter) and they should be sleeping through the night (6-8 hours) by the age of 8 -10 weeks. If your 10-month old is on solids, especially, the mid-night feeding can be dropped.

Best of luck!
K.
