She's a Climber!

Help! My 14 1/2 month old daughter climbs on EVERYTHING! While I'm thrilled she's developing such great motor skills and strength, she frequently climbs into unsafe situations. Any suggestions on how to curb the climbing?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for the support. It sounds like most of us have the same dilemma. We want them to learn and be free to explore, but not kill themselves in the process! We have a niece that suffered a traumatic brain injury related to a climbing incident so we're probably more paranoid then most. I guess we just have to continue to be super vigilant in watching her. Thanks again everyone and good luck w/ your own climbers.

J.,

I know what you mean, I have a 16 month old little girl that has been climbing on stuff for about 3 month's. I wish I had some great advice to give you but I don't. Just wanted to let you know that you are not the only one in this boat. LOL
The only thing I do with Taylor is when I see it I tell her it's not safe and she needs to sit down and I snap my fingers to get her attention and point my finger down to the ground and she will sit down. She is really good about sitting down when I tell her but she loves to climb and hasn't stopped.
Sorry I don't have any real good advice for you but good luck with this!!

My climber is now 8 1/2 and still climbing!! I believed my daughter learned to crawl just so she could climb, in fact she climbed before she could walk. If she's a TRUE climber like my daughter she will never grow out of it at least mine isn't yet. It seems the higher the better these days. If there's a tree she's in it anything she can climb she does. However she has learned two things 1.) If she gets up there she better know how to get down (She's to big for me to climb after anymore) and 2.) If it doesn't look safe don't take the chance (I feel All Children's Knows us by name!). If she's like my son (6) just catch them when they fall and kiss it to make it better and they will get bored when they find out playing with friends is more fun about 3-4 yrs old. Hope this helps. Feel free to contact me anytime.

I can totally relate to what you are talking about. My daughter, Ava, just turned 14 months on the 2nd of August and she climbs on everything as well. She has been walking since 10 months and climbing since 12 months. We have just tried to make her climbing as safe as possible. We no longer keep the dining room chairs at the table or she will be up on the table. We have wood floors so it is scary. I try to take her to the park or mall play area frequently so she can get her climbing fix. I think it is difficult but I dont know of any way to stop it, just ways to make it safer. If you live locally, maybe we could get together with our climbers at the park or mall, they can climb together!! :O)

My 15 month old does the same thing! She climbs everything and I mean everything. So much for baby gates, because she climbs that too! I feel she must be learning something while she is doing it, so I let her. But I am right there behind her ready to catch!

Hi J.,
My 15 moth old baby girl is doing the same thing, couches, tables, beds, climbing into the cabinets, into her toybox. It is driving me crazy! What we do is keep a very close eye on her, and if I have to do something around the house, to her crib she goes. I have 2 older ones, and they weren't this into as climbing as she is. I am interested to see what advice you get, and hopefully it will help me too! I think they are too young to quite understand that no mens no yet, and I sure hope that it stops soon! M.
