She Throws up When She Burps

My 3 month old daughter, Marisol, had to have her formula changed due to constapition. But now just about everytime she burps she throws up, and I'm not talking spiting up I mean vomiting. It only seems to ever happen to me even if I don't feed her so I doubt it's the way she is fed. Is there any way to burp her so that she won't vomit. I've tried half way through the bottle but she rarely will finish her bottle then. She only eats 5oz max and goes 2-4 hours between bottles. I'll try just about anything.

What can I do next?

All I can say is try yet another formula. If you haven't already, maybe try a formula that addresses constipation but has soy proteins instead of dairy milk. My neice had major issues with throwingup and the soy formula solved all problems. My 7 mo. old daughter also has problems with constipation and I haven't found a formula that's solved her belly problems yet. My mom also claims that soy based formula solved my own infant constipation problems, so maybe it will help Mrisol's belly all around. Good Luck!

I agree, acid reflux. My daughter and son both had it. The pediatrian can help. Good luck, Jen P.

Maybe she has acid reflux. Same thing happened with my son. His doc put him on Tagamet and it worked like a charm!

Sounds like Acid Reflux to me. Make an appt for her Ped and have her checked for it. They will schedule an upper GI (painless) and can see it right there on the screen. That is what they did for my son when he was 6 weeks old. Also, after many attempts at formula (even buying Nutramigen) the best for his acid reflux and for his little system to digest was Nestle Good Start. The formula is wonderful. He is now 16 months old and outgrew his acid reflux and no more meds!
Good luck!

Hi! I think you might be tapping her a little too hard for her? My one daughter was like that. Instead of patting her back I had to rub it to get the air out. Maybe try that? Kinda in a circular motion. That helped her to not puke so much.

she is getting plenty formula so don't worry about only 5 hours max. Not all babies will take 8 ounces at a time. Only my 1 son out of 5 kids ever did.

Need to be consistent and burp her at 2 oz and then at 4.

If I were you, I would call the doctor and let him/her know what is going on. She may be having a bad reaction to the new formula and you may need to switch again. I know when my son and my nephew had problems with constipation on a formula that was otherwise working for them, the doctor recommended 2-4 ounces of pear or white grape juice once a day. That little bit of juice solved the constipation problem.

Again, though, I would check with the doctor and see what he has to say. He may want to check her to make sure there isn't something else going on (like acid reflux or stenosis-- not sure what the whole name of the condition is... my nephew had it and it caused vomiting because the opening into the stomache was not open all the way. he had to have surgery to have it corrected). It is probably just the formula switch but it is better to be safe when it concerns your child.

The only other advice would be to do what you said you've already tried (give her 2 ounces, burp her, give her 2 more and burp her again, etc.).

Good luck. I hope that it stops for you soon. I know how inconvenient and worrisome it can be when they are constantly vomiting on you.

I would discuss this with the pediatrition. It sounds to me like she is possibly allergic to the formula. My daughter was allergic to the soy. The formula stayed down long enough for her to get nourishment and then it would all come up at one time. It may be time to try "another switch".

Hi A. -

At first when I read your question, it reminded me of my boys. They both spat up and later vomited when food was introduced. Both were diagnosed with Acid Reflux very early on at about 1 -2 months of age. Their pediatrician had me add rice cereal to their formula (milk shake consistency) to help keep their food down... and it really did help with the spitting up/vomitting etc. Also keeping them upright during and after feedings, raising the bed to have their heads elevated etc. And both were put on prescription meds, which helped as well.

But with your baby's history of constipation, I would check with your Dr. before adding something like rice cereal because that can cause constipation, and you don't want to add to her troubles. Good luck dear :-)

try feeding the baby sitting in a more upward position. my daughter had acid reflux and she vomited every time she ate also and feeding her in her bouncy seat or sitting straight up on my lap really helped.

Hi there,

I was thinking that you might want to talk to your doctor about the possibility of her having acid reflux. My daughter had it and she was put on medicine and it improved. Advice from us is good, but I believe with such a young baby you are better off consulting a physician. Your daughter might be uncomfortable and you don't want that to continue. Good luck, let me know what happens.

Burping every 2 oz is supposed to be the norm. Could she be over eating? Reember to that sometimes fluid looks more when its spilt. Try pouring 1oz of milk on your kitchen countertop. It could be you need to stop feeding at 4oz instead of 5oz. Try to figure out how much is coming out first. It may look more than what it actually is.
