I'm in a 2 bedroom house and expecting a little girl soon. I have two sons already and I was wanting to create a room for them to share that's not to girly but does show her presence in the room. I really like the colors purple (my favorite color) and yellow for her. Any ideas for the room? I'd appreciate any responses because I am at a lost on how to make it work.

ps* Oh yeah sorry boys will be 4 and 2 when she gets here.

What can I do next?

I have a son and daughter who share a room, and I used those huge stick-on wall decals to differentiate his area from hers. You can get them at stores like AC Moore or Target. Or search online, and you can see ideas. Some are as big as the wall, such as trees with birds on them, and some are smaller stickers with a theme, like a bunch of planets or flowers or airplanes. You might do well with just something like big dots in different colors. Fun and inexpensive :) It is hard to find ideas for brothers and sisters who share. I remember being annoyed by that when looking through catalogs and magazines. Good luck!!

I have a sis.-in-law who is great at this. She had a boy/girl shared room and did it brown, pink, and turkoise. She used brown as the "shared" color and then pink for the girl and turkoise for the boy. I have seen their room and it really works well. From what I've seen her do, I would say, 1) choose a neutral color for the "main" color of the room (whether it be for the walls or main color of bedspreads or whatever). In her case, this was brown; in your case, maybe the yellow. Then, choose two secondary colors that will go all right together, but will highlight the individual genders and "separate" them a little more. (Maybe purple for her and blue for the boys... there are a lot of combinations that would work, but some that would clash. A lot will depend on the shade of purple, etc.) For my sister-in-law's secondary color, she had their names on blocks on the walls, and had found material for blankets that was brown with pink polka dots and brown with turkoise polka dots. Obviously things like shelves, toss pillows, rugs, or smaller pieces of furniture could be done with the secondary colors. It was simple, but it seemed to work. I am not one for mixing a lot of different patterns, so my personal advice is to stay away from that and keep it simple, although that is a trend right now. Good luck! That's tough! I hope the room is big enough for all of them--but I have done 3 in a room before too (all girls though)!

I think purple and yellow can speak to boy energy....I saw a design magazine with a spread for two sharing a room: walls painted alternating purple and green. The opposite walls were painted the same color. It looked great. Maybe bunk or trundle beds on a yellow wall for the boys and the crib for baby girl on a purple wall, everyone with coordinating bedclothes and of course, matching wall hangings. Like their names or have the older sibs do some special art to hang above their beds with purple and yellow colors? I saw another mag with two twin beds for boy and girl and everything about the room mirrored each other...same bed frame, nightstand, bookshelf, but the details were different ie more blue on the boy side and more pink on the girl side, more frills on the girl bed, a football pillow on the boy bed. The diff were subtle and everything went together without matching identically. Hope this helps and Have fun!

my best friend did a room for her son and daughter. the walls were painted split color.. the top blue (for the sky) the bottom green ( for the grass)...
on the "boy side" she had a mural painted with a tree and a swing and animals.. on the "girl side" she said butterflys and flowers. it all went the "out doors" theme. its super cute and worked GREAT!

check out the website, familyfun.com I recently saw an article on there about shared spaces for boys and girls.

Also I've been told that green is still a gender neutral color and it can be accented nicely with either more boyish or girlish colors.

Ask them- get the boys input. I know they are young.but you then really make it their room, and they have ideas to welcome their sister.
I know it could be more trouble but let them contribute.
best, k

How old are the kids? You could do animal themes, safari, farm, whatever. They are kid friendly, and gender neutral.

Very simple answer. Paint one side of the room a color for the boys for example blue and then the other side purple for her. If you want yellow add yellow flowers or decorations to her wall. On the boys wall use cars, trucks, etc...on their wall to decorate. You can get the decorations at the dollar store and even switch them out from time to time. Purple and blue go together great, or even yellow and blue. Or green and yellow....Use your imagination. Why not ask the boys what color they want and take them to the dollar store to pick out the decorations? I would even let them help pick out the decorations for the baby. It would be fun for all...

Well, I also have a 2 bedroom house with a boy and girl sharing a room. My son is also 4 and my daughter is 2.5. I recently redid the whole room and I did a nature theme (unisex) with awesome wall decalls I got at Target! On my daughter's "side" I used the wall decalls that had more pinks and purple (comes in the set) and put the large tree with flowers (also comes in the set) and matched her bedding or crib with field of flowers design. and on my son's "side" I put the woodland animals, squirel, owl, hedgehog, etc.. (comes in the set) and we put some planes flying by (wall decals from Lowes) and matched his bedding with "plane crazy" from Disney that I found at Walmart! So the room has a united feel but each side is slightly more masculine or feminin. Hope this helps, Good luck!
