Severe Reactions to Mosquito Bites

My son is 2 1/2 and he swells so terribly when bit by a mosquito, he gets such thick leathery skin in that area and it develops water blisters and it's just awful. He had this last year too and had hives head to toe once once and we rushed him to the ER.

Does anyone have any other advice than what his allergist is stating: ice area, use Cultivate steroid for a couple days and stop, give zytec right away and for several days to slow the reaction. She promises it'll get better but probably not next year but the year after.

Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks much!

I heard if you place a drop of tree tea oil (you can buy it from Whole Foods), it's suppose to stop the itching and swelling.

My son also has severe reactions to mosquito bites. If I have it handy, I use After Bite for kids. If I can, I make a baking soda paste and apply it to the bites. The downfall is that is dries and crusts, which can be messy. I recently took him to the ped because his whole calf swelled up after a bite. It wasn't painful or red, but I was worried. She suggested baking soda paste and said some studies show that meat tenderizer also works! Since I don't own it, I went with the baking soda.

Both my children have been allergic to mosquito bites. I gave them benedryl (advise from their pediatrician) and anti itch cream to help. I just started carrying it in our car so we had it. Unfortunately, it did make my children tired. (could be good or bad) depending on what activity you are in the middle of doing.

Hope this helps.

I use a natural product I got from WHole Foods called Kids Armour and have also heard great things about Badger products. They are 100% essential oils and work great! Your wee one will smell a little like a candle but it does the job! I never have mosquito bites on my little one and never have to put harmful chemicals on her skin! I have heard that a paste of baking soda will help, but not sure if that is for the itching?

I wish I had a solution; our little guy (now 7) reacted so severely to trees that one touch of a leaf sometimes and he would have the same reaction you describe. (He also has several severe food allergies and reacts to bees and mosquitoes.) For several autumns, we just had to cover him head to toe every time he went out to play. Tucked pants into socks, long shirts, even wore a pair of gloves out to play. I guess prevention in this case, even if it looks like you are taking things to extremes, may be worth it. Thankfully, it hasn't been too hot this summer. Maybe you can find trousers and long shirts in a very light fabric? Healing wishes to your boy.

In this case, prevention is as important as treatment. He very well may have developed an allergy. I would keep as much of his skin covered as possible in the evenings when mosquitos are out and use insect repellant. Or better yet try to avoid having him outside in prime mosquito feeding time. Sometimes a baking soda paste can help ease the discomfort of a bite.

My brother used to swell up from mosquito bites and our doctor suggested rubbing the juice of an onion on it! It really did work! We just had to make sure he couldn't rub the juice in his eye. Also, he smelled a bit onion-y afterward. For some reason it took the swelling down and the itch away.

I use Miracle Mineral Supplement on all my mosquito bites. I put a drop on, rub it in for 1 minute and wash off. It neutralizes the itch on contact and the bite disappears.

Hi J.-
Your post caught my eye, as my son (5 yrs) just developed the same type reaction tonight for the first time. I'm wondering what type of responses you've received so far. My son has had his share of mosquito bites, and even has some on his face/neck right now that are normal looking bites. However, tonight at his bath I noticed a big red area on his leg - warm, raised, and itchy. Also, the leathery shiny skin you mentioned. Sorry I don't have any answers for you! Thanks for your time.
