Severe Reactions to Bug Bites

My 5 year old daughter has severe reactions to bug bites -- mosquitos specifically but most any bug bite will cause an adverse reaction. Each bite turns into a HUGE swollen welt within minutes. They become an angry red color, sting, ultimately fester and finally heal. She played soccer last night and ended up with 3 bites on her legs. The one on her shin looks like a big goose egg this morning. The other two (one on her ankle and other shin) have swollen so much she can barely bend her ankle and -- even though a good six inches apart, the swelling from them have progressed so far that it simply looks like her entire lover leg is a huge welt.

She is a very good sport about them but they definitely cause her discomfort (trying to get to sleep at night is almost impossible and she spends a lot of time icing the bites to reduce the swelling and sting.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? If so, what did you do (I hate the idea of giving her an antihistamine each day -- especially because it really doesn't seem to work)? Does anyone know of a homeopathic pharmacy/pharmacist that they would recommend visiting?

What can I do next?

The exact same thing happened to me as a kid and now happens to my daughter. It is really unfortunate and uncomfortable. I don't have good answers, a benedryl pill seems to help my daughter and I only give it as needed. As the summer progresses, her reactions do decrease. We also use a chilled lavender seed filled pillow to reduce the swelling as well. We are also firm believers in bug spray as yucky as it is. You definitely have my sympathy. It's just a very unfortunate thing. I'll be looking forward to other people's suggestions, too!

My niece & nephew have severe reactions to bug bites, and I have been using a Bee Balm salve on their bites. I originally bought the balm at a craft sale for some skin problems as the balm is supposed to help treat Cuts, scrapes, bruises, eczema, psoriases, burns, diaper rash, cold sores, dry skin, chapped lips and hands, acne sores, dry cuticles, blisters, sunburns, insect bites, hives, and more. So, I bought it and also thought of my niece & nephew.

Well, I have tried it on my rash and it dissapeared, I also burned my finger on my stove and immediately put the balm on it and my blister was gone the next day! When my sister came over with the kids, I put it on their bites and did that a couple days in a row. It helped alot.

The place I got my balm from was http://www.beesalve.com. It was really good stuff, and it is all natural (which was very important to me).

Good luck!

My youngest is 9 and has always had this same reaction to mosquito bites. I read on a different discussion board that Chloraseptic works. I recently tried it and it did work. We were away from the house when he first noticed the bite, so it had started to swell quite a bit when we got home. I sprayed his bite when we got home and the swelling went down faster and he had less itching than other things we have tried. Good luck!

Hi M., this happens to my son too. His eye once swelled completely shut because of a mosquito bite near it!

Anyway, I've found the Benedryl cream works well, IF it's applied immediately after the bug bites. If there are numerous bites or I didn't notice it right away, I give him liquid benedryl. Good luck!!

This happens to my 5 yo dd, too. It started the summer she was 1 1/2 and we were camping. We thought we were going to have to take her to the hospital, we had no idea what was going on! Once we realized it was just her body reacting to bug bites, we started giving her benedryl when it is bad. I never took her to the doctor about it and always forget when we are there for something else! Now that she is 5, it doesn't seem to be as bad as when she was younger.
