Severe Itching

I'm 35wks pregnant and have been having severe itching and losing a LOT of sleep because of it. I have NO rash or bumps anywhere on me. I itch from head to toe but very very little on my chest and abdomen. I had PUPPS with my last preg, but like I said, I don't have a rash, so I know that's not it. I've tried all sorts of lotions, antihistamines, calming bath soaks, cold showers and compresses, everything I can think of. It doesn't seem to be allergies or a reaction to anything specific, and I have not changed my diet, detergent, soaps or anything like that recently. It's NOT dry skin, everyone has looked at my skin and could tell immediately that's not what it is. My head, face, neck, arms, hands, legs, back and feet are all itching to the point I feel I'm going to go crazy! It wakes me up all night if it even lets me fall asleep. I've been getting extremely nauseated due to the lack of sleep and getting really bad headaches. I don't know how much longer I can take this. I've had itching in pregnancies before but nothing like this. It's in places that wouldn't be due to stretching of the skin and stretch marks, so I know it's not that either. What in the world is going on with me!?! Please help if you've ever experienced this and know what it could be or what could relieve the insane itching.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I got checked yesterday for the Cholestasis, and my results just came in saying my liver's fine. My blood pressure was fine yesterday, too, and I haven't taken prenatals in a couple of months, and I've always had allergies to this that or the other, but my skin gets a little blotchy or completely breaks out with allergies, and I don't usually itch over my whole entire body, just wherever I was affected. So...I just really don't know what it could be, but I'm really glad it's not the cholestasis. Thanks for your help ladies! - K.

I dont' know about the itching. I wish there was something I could do to help. I was just reading the 3 boys and know you are pregnant with a baby girl. Let me tell you that girl is going to be so much fun. I have three boys and a girl as well. My oldest is 6 1/2 and my girl is 13 months. I hope you get rid of the itching soon.

When i was pregnant with my twins the same thing happened to me. Its the worst itch, absolutely AWFUL!! turns out my liver enzymes were elevated. I would definately talk to your OB and get some labs drawn.

Good Luck and hang in there!!

It could be either of the prior two answers as well as an allergy to the prenatal vitamins even if they are the ones you have taken with previous pregnancies. Your body goes through lots of things when pregnancy from your eye sight changing to allergy changes. I never had any kind of allergy until I got pregnant with my fourth child. Now I am allergic to pollen and many other things that I hadn't been allergic to before. Definitely talk to your doctor and see about getting tests done.

Since you have been checked out by the Dr and seem fine I suggest using Goldbond Medicated lotion in the green bottle. That was the only thing that helped my itching whaen I was pregnant with my twins in 2004. It smells kinda bad but better than being miserable itching all the time. I tried several other lotions, cocoa butter, and belly oil, none of which worked like the Goldbond did.

I don't know anything about itching, but I googled it. I read something about ICP, which is a problem with the liver. It can be diagnosed with blood tests. I hope that's not it, but it kinda sounded like it. Please call your nurse or doctor to make sure! There may be something else it could be too. Let us know if you find out anything.

The next time you are at walmart or drug store, sit down and have your blood pressure taken on one of those machines. When my bp is up, I get all over itching (like I have fleas). I have normal bp, but during my pregnancy it danced all over the charts - it also gave me terrible headaches and nausea.
Also - ck with your dr at next appt.
Good luck - you are in the home stretch now :)

I just had my little boy less than a month ago and i was like u. Severe itching,no sleep, I even left scars from scratching all the time. I was put in the hospital over this and the dr. on call tested my urine for a disease u get in some pregnancy known as "the itchy mom syndrome". Not knowing what this was I got on the net. It's some type of liver disorder caused by ur gawbladder. It can be harmful to ur baby if left undetected. I had to deliver before my 37th week because of this. Another sign is darkurine. Ask ur dr. to ck it out.
