Wondering if anyone out there has been prescribed acne medication safe for breastfeeding.

I have severe cystic acne on the back and chest. I'm 30, and the only thing that has ever helped me is antibiotics. I stopped every prescription medication for them, even the topical ones, when I was pregnant, and now I am using over the counter stuff, but it's not working! I am actually in pain from the cysts. I have a 4 month old and I plan to breastfeed till a year. It's a big pain for me to go into the city to my dermatologist, so I'd like to be informed ahead of time about my options.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Not sure about the meds you can take, but I get probably 4-5 of these a year. Not only do they take forever to heal, but they are soooo painful. I have a skin regime that's worked well for me, its reduced my regular acne also!

Dr Bonner's Tea Tree Liquid Soap or the plain castile soap (very cheap and oh so cleansing)
Thayer's Witch Hazel and Rose Water (about $8, its high quality witch hazel and the rose water is naturally soothing and apparently helps with wrinkles!)
Dab pure tea tree oil and lavender oil on the cysts 1-2 times a day. It dries them up and the tea tree is antiseptic.

Good luck

Cystic acne is very hard, if not impossible to control "over the counter".
I would recommend using witch hazel as an astringent because it's cooling, soothing, it cleanses without over drying.
I had a friend with cystic acne and she went to the dermatologist who used injections into the cysts to clear them up. I don't know what the medication was, but it dried the cysts from the inside. The needles were so small that she couldn't feel them and they left no marks on her skin. Even her face.
It was pretty miraculous, really.
I think you should take the trek to check with your dermatologist. They will tell you what is and isn't safe while nursing.
Like I said, witch hazel is cheap, can be purchased at any drug store and will at least give you some relief topically.
A friend's daughter had problems and even proactive didn't help, but witch hazel and cotton balls made a huge difference. It's worth a try.

Best wishes.

There are MANY breastfeeding safe medications. If you do not know an IBCLC or CLC - message me with the likely candidates of medications you may be prescribed and I can look them up in my drug reference guide made specifically for pregnant and breastfeeding Moms.
