Seven Year Old Daughter Already Has Body Odor?

OK Ladies, this one has really thrown me! I have two boys and one girl. My daughter for the last week or so has had this horrible odor and I've been giving her two baths a day trying to figure out what is going on. Today after school she once again smelled terrible and I figured out it's coming from under her arms. Why is she having BO at such a young age? My oldest son is ten and doesn't smell this bad. Do you think it's an underlying medical condition and I should take her to the doctor? Who else has gone through this and what was the outcome? She is a very big girl for her age in weight and height but has always been very healthy. I'm just not sure what to do and wanted to hear from you before I do anything else! Thanks so much!

A friend of mine had similiar issues and the Dr. told her to go with organic milk and everything organic that she could....Being that she is in the top of the range for weight and height, evidence shows that girls who reach around the 100 pound mark, no matter the age is far more likely to start the changes in puberty and the body order is coming from puberty related hormones.

You may want to ask the Doc if there could be anything causing that. In many cases, if there is a medical issue that causes odor, she would not be feeling well.

Could be time for deodorant. You mention she bathes regularly. Are you pretty sure she gets clean? I only ask b/c one of mine was pretty stinky at 11, and he showered every day. Come to find out with a lot of questions (and checking the soap and the dry washcloth!) we discovered he was playing around in the shower....making dams....creating waterfalls....not really getting clean.

My husband threatened to stand in the bathroom during his next shower and viola!!! Boy started USING the SOAP on his body and the smell went away.

My daughter is 5 and already has underarm odor. We did not make a big deal. I bought her a deodorant of her own and showed her how to use it. It fixed the problem. All kids are different. My main concern was that she not smell at school where some mean kid might notice and tease her.
Don't sweat it! (my attempt at humor)

Hi Elizabeth, I wonder if your DD is getting rid of toxins? Bacteria being eliminated from the body often smells foul. Would you consider using an herbal body cleanse? It is homeopathic, safe for children and adults and would help to clear out bacteria etc that may be causing the odor problem. IMO she is too young to be experiencing body odor from hormonal changes. Using antiperspirant or deodorant will only mask the underlying issue. If you are interested I can suggest the one I have used for my children as young as yours. HTH

If you would like to try some things before bringing her to the pediatrician, try omitting foods like eggs and fish. The odors of these kinds of foods are hard for some people to rid themselves of and they come out in their sweat. Hope this helps.

Hi Elizabeth,

My daughter has the same problem only it started when she was 4 and is now 12. I asked the doctor and he wasn't too concerned about it. She has been wearing deodorant for years and it takes care of the problem. I also have an older daughter who never had this problem. I just chalked it up to genetics because her dad has the same problem. However, if it makes you feel better take her to the doctor.

considering her size i bet she is starting puberty. i was nine when i got my period. ( i hear that all this starts about two years before you get your period )seems like the bigger girls got there periods first. buy her some deodaunt. or let her go with you to pick it out. also get her a training bra as soon as you can...its really embarrassing perhaps waiting till the christmas break or even till the summer if possible.

Often body odor comes from having eaten something the person is reactive to ~ by having body odor. Try eliminating different foods like dairy(ALL), flour (All) products, for a few days. These two are typical problem items. Also any artificial sweeteners or MSG.
In the meantime, I have a friend who found sqeezing a fresh lemon and putting some under his arm stopped massive bad odor. He kept the squeezed lemon juice in the refrigerator and it lasted for at least a week.
I wish you well. Lorraine

Hello! My daughter is 8 and is starting to have body odor, it's the on start of growing up, she has had her first breast bud, confirmed by her pedi. She said to me one day that her nipple hurt and I felt a lump on one and took her in, I was like already, pedi said yes they are starting at 8 yrs. old so I'm figuring she'll be getting her cycle in the next couple of years. My daughter noticed that she smelled under her arms after P.E. so I'm going to get her deodorant, she wants it so hopefully she'll start learning to take care of herself and of course with me guiding her. Hope this helps. I wouldn't worry!

I would ask the doctor about it. Have you tried using deo. On her for a day to see if that makes a diff? I would for sure ask the doc about it. 7 years old is a bit young to start all that.

Hi, my daughter had the same issue at that age. It is naturo al but unatuaral for a girl to smell like grown men. Anyway a simple ol folks remedy, is to cut up a baking potato and rub under both of her arms. Do it every few months. Trust me it works.

Hi Elizabeth,
I guess that I have a different take on this. I know that you are bathing your daughter 2x a day and she is still having odor.

I would continue with the baths and if you need to, make sure that the deodorant that you are using is only a natural kind from Whole Foods or the natural foods section of the grocery store. You do not want all those chemicals absorbing into your daughter's underarms.

Next, I would make sure to get all the processed foods and hormone milk, meats and poultry out of her diet. These hormones can cause early puberty in girls. I would also make sure that she gets enough exercise and keeps her weight under control with good healthy foods.
