Seven Month Old Breastfed Baby Won't Take Bottle

I have just been put on a strong pencillin and cannot feed my seven month old who has only been breastfed up to this point. I have some frozen breast milk but not enough and she is refusing the bottle with the breast milk and the bottle of goat's milk also. She only ate a few ounces today and slept most of the day. She is VERY upset with me. Does anyone have any ideas about how I can get her to take the bottle. She's a very healthy, butterball weighing it at almost 18 pounds. I'm worried about her not eating enough while I'm on a pump and dump schedule for the next several days. Thank you!

What can I do next?

I hope this problem has resolved - it is already Tuesday. But if not, consider asking your doctor to find a drug that is compatible with breastfeeding or call back and make sure that you need to dump the milk. You could call a lactation consultant who would have access to books that describe the side effects of particular medications and the amount that passes into breastmilk so that you would have more information.

It is really tough to be sick and have an unhappy baby to care for. Keep up the pumping as sudden weaning is really tough on your body. You may have better luck feeding the baby with a sippy cup.

Get well and hang in there.

Hi C.,

Try using the nipple that is shaped like a nipple. Playtex and the other brands have them, I find Playtex one works better. It looks like this: http://www.playtexstore.com/cgi-bin/item/PLA05713

If your 7 month old won't take it at first, just keep wiggling by the mouth, and eventually he'll start sucking. If that doesn't work, try the sippy cups! (They work wonders)!

Good Luck!

Hi - A few quick ideas: feed her when she is half asleep. This always seems to work to sneak something - like the bottle - to my son. Oh, and also, my Mom ended up puting my brother right on the sippy cup at 7 months b/c she needed to leave him and he would not take the bottle. Also - try all different types of nipples. I've heard that Dr. Brown's are good for breastfed babies - although we use Born Free.
And - I hate to suggest this but my son at one point would only take Formula from the bottle - not breast milk. He was so picky! Luckily this changed.
