Service Project Needed for Teenage Girls

I am the mentor for six 9th grade girls going through Confirmation at our church. I have two boys myself so sometimes I need a little extra help with "girl things." I need a small service project that they can do together or as a group at a sleepover party. Last year at this time I had them make Halloween/Fall centerpieces for a banquet at a local women and children's shelter. They turned out great and were a big hit, but I think they should do something different this year. They've also done grocery shopping and collected toiletries for the same shelter. We've gone to Feed My Starving Children together and that was fun, but this needs to be something they can do on their own at their party in someone's home. Any ideas? P.S. I'm not crafty so for the centerpieces last year I helped round up supplies, but I relied heavily on the moms to come up with crafty ideas.

What can I do next?

They can make baby blankets (as easy as cutting up cute squares of fleece, no need to sew) for preemies or baby's in the hospital that do have very little coming home. A friend of mine made burial clothes for babies as well. We made (but you can purchase) pillowcases and stuffed them with pillows for children in foster care or shelters who usually have very little belongings when they have to leave homes in a hurry. They can beautify a run local down park or local old cemetery, by pulling weeds, planting flowers. They can make homemade cards for a local nursing home or veteran's hospital, who often are older and lonely and they can go and visit with them.

One idea that was really neat, is a group of girls did hair, makeup and got donated used prom dresses. They held a beauty pageant for disabled girls and women, (most of them were down syndrome or something of that nature). Everyone got a prize for something unique to them.

What about making overnight bags for kids going into foster care. Many times children enter foster care with no notice and none of their stuff and if it is late at night they may not get new stuff until the next day. When I worked with social services a group had donated overnight bags with pj's, a change of clothes, travel size toiletries and maybe a cuddly animal or bedtime book all backed in a small duffel bag or backpack (or diaper bag for babies). This was a huge help and very much appreciated by the children and foster parents. So many children come from homes where they have very few things of their own (or they have their things in a black garbage bag).

Bake desserts for a homeless shelter or soup kitchen.

Shop at the dollar store and assemble shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. There are instructions online if you've never done this before. If you live near a processing center, I hear it's fun to help sort and prepare the boxes for shipment, sometime around the end of November.

Pick up school supplies on clearance, create bags or fill backpacks for students who can't afford some of these basics.

Call your local senior center and see what they need, like lap quilts for wheelchair bound seniors. Our senior center provides hand sewn bags that hang on walkers. I made a similar one for a friend - just a square tote bag with 2 straps that go over the top bar of a walker, big enough for a water bottle, book, kleenex and such.

we used to bring old clothes/dresses, accessories & makeup to donate to womens/children shelters

also we used to go out in the neighborhood & ask for blankets to donate

they could make up little bags for teenage girls that have things like toiletries & makeup & accessories & nail polishes in them, nothing big or expensive but when you dont get things like that you love having even a few things

also something we used to do for kids/teenagers is make up a bunch of party favor bags to take to the shelter, when you dont get to have or go to birthday parties you never get stuff like that & they loved it...we would bake treats to put in & other little treats like nail polishes or whatever the girls themselves like
