Serger Suggestions

I love to sew and would really love a serger. I have saved my Christmas and birthday money and can afford about 200 dollars. I've been looking at a Brother, which is the same brand as my regular sewing machine, but I would hate to spend so much money if it's not worth it. Does anyone know of a good, yet affordable one? Someone gave me a singer tiny serger last year, but i've never been able to get it to work well.

ETA: I think the problem with the tiny serger is that it's made for small projects and cant hold up to what I want to use it for.

What can I do next?

Singer and Brother are both really great brands. Brother is worth the money. You could also take the serger you were given in to be reapired. That may be cheaper than buying a new one. I had a Brother serger for years and it worked like a champ. I say spend the money on a Brother. Good luck.

If you have a Hancocks around they have a Janome for about $189. Janome makes machines for Sears and are good. I have three by different manufacturers and my oldest is 30 years old.

Good luck on your machine.

I have a serger that is just like the Brother (same machine different brand). I really like it smooth great stitches and easy to thread. My understanding is there are about 4 companies that manufacture sergers so there is a lot of "crossover" amoung brands. Maybe you could decide what you want and look for one secondhand? There seem to be a fair amount of people who get sewing machines and sergers and then don't use them. There's also a site called http://sewing.patternreview.com/ that has a lot of information and reviews of sewing machines. Good luck and have fun!

I don't even know what a serger does, so I have no suggestions as to brand. But I do have a suggestion as to where to look. We decided we needed a GPS because age has caused us to get lost easily. (We are in our 60's). So I did an online search. My cusin had suggested a garmin so that is what I looked for. I did not like the prices for these either. When I put Garmin in the search engine, rather than looking at Staples Walmart, Kmart Sears etc, Amazon.com came up. I was very surprised but went there . I found a nice Garmin regular price $320 for $98. This was for a new one. the refurbished ones were more expenisve! So after you decide on brand you might look there. You could get more serger than you thought.
