Good morning All!
my son is will be five years old this october ( GOD willing). My son did go to feeding therapy for about a year and a half when he was one year and a half because he was having "sensory issues with certain foods"
His therapist transferred to another facility in another city and he started to backtrack. after three months, my husband and I decided to pull him from the program. he was doing great until now.I noticed him chewing his food and then spitting out. This is how it started the last time.
we are currently on a waiting list to be evaluated again. I realize NOW that it was huge mistake to pull him from the program.
Any mom out there dealing with this?
I would like suggestions and maybe just your experiences.
Thank youso much .

my almost 5 year old son just transitioned to textured food about 3 months ago. the feeding therapist showed us how to do the body brushing, which we did twice a day, as well as oral stimulation with chewy toys and a "z vibe." it took about 6 months in feeding therapy until he transitioned from pureed food to "real" food and i think he was successful because of the combination of treatments. whenever we introduced a new food, even pureed, he would resist in the form of regression. meal time was almost always stressful, but the therapy helped tremendously. you can pm me if you have any specific questions. good luck.

Is the food his only issue? I would bet that there are also other issues as well. You need to see an occupational therapist, preferably one that specializes in eating issues. Does he go to school? Can they help him there? Does he have any delays or issues in other areas like speech so that he can get admitted to your town's preschoool?

M.,
I used to work in an ECI program. Along with the feeding therapy, we would do a scrub brushing technique to help with sensory issues. It is usually a occupational therapist who is trained in this, but anyone can perform it once they are shown how.
