Sensitivity to Noise?

Hello Moms,

I'm starting to piece together a problem we may have with my 4 yo son and need your help...

Last night my son was unable to perform at our Vacation Bible School concert - he said he didn't want to because it was too loud. He was actually hyperventilating he was so upset. He was right, there were speakers and it was louder than what he is used to. Seems normal enough, right?

However, recently we also had to remove him from a martial arts class because he said it was too loud. SOMETIMES when he was in class he would cowers, sit on the ground and cry quietly and sit, hanging his head. We THOUGHT it was because the kids in the class were older than him, but he DID say "I don't like them shouting."

This morning I've sat here and finally pieced together a pattern. I have to blow dry my hair in a different room from him, I can't vaccuum if he is home unless I want to get him upset, and if someone speaks too loudly he gets very very upset - we've always just said "Oh isn't he so sweet and sensitive?!"

SO MOMs, is this normal or do we have a potential problem here? I started reading the internet and of course it is such valuable information, but dangerous too. There's too much info and it starts to make you paranoid. So I thought I'd ask you all, because you know best being a mom.

Help and other similar stories are very much appreciated.

Kindly, Traci

Hi,
First of all, he definaltely has hypersensitive hearing if he is bothered by loud sounds like that. You need to take him to an audiologist to test this type of hearing. They W. do an "octive range" type test to determine his threshold to certain sound pitches. Some children W. get used to different sounds, there is also audio training programs you can do to help the ears adjust to different levels of sound. Yes, it is all very confusing i know. One thing that W. help is ear plugs. If he is in a situation like loud rooms or movie theatres the ear plugs W. diffuse the sound. Not that he needs to wear them all the time, just in places to make him confortable. It is actually painful to them in some way. Imagine if you had to listen to things at a very loud range. His hearing is so good that he could probably hear things we cannot. Continue to look into it so he is comfortable in school and not having problems too. A good Audiologist W. be able to lead you in the right direction and os course mamsource.
All the best to you,
km

To me it sounds like a Sensory Processing problem. Both my kids have sensativites to noise. I had an Occupational Therapist tell me once that her client who had prblems with certain noises told her "lets try playing those noises in the background while I am doing work" So if it was resturant noise they would play that in teh background really low while she worked and it helped her get over the sounds and they did it with several sounds she was sensative to. I need to do it for my son with crickets still. He can not stand to be outside at night because of them.
You might also have the doctor look into his ears just to make sure there is nothing wrong. Also an Occupation Therapist can tell you weather he has sensroy processing for sure.
Hope that helps a little

He's most likely an "Indigo Child"...very sensitive and connected to the spiritual and emotional energies in the world. How's he doing in school? Perhaps consider home-schooling and connecting with other parents who are raising the next generation of fabulous children...
Blessings, S.

I have had problems with my own ears since getting one really bad swimmers ear infection. They were never the same since. I cannot go to concerts or take even being in a loud restaurant. It is bothersome in that my ears crackle, like when a speaker cracks if you know what I mean. It could be simply a buildup of inner ear wax or something else. I would take him to an ear, nose, throat doctor to get him checked out.
