Hello,
I have a 3 year old whose school just ended for the summer and I'm looking for an age appropriate camp or part time summer school to fill its place. Just looking for any local programs that may work. Figured I'd start by asking fellow moms since you all typically know. Thanks!

Northern Virginia Academy, which has several campuses, offers a summer camp program. I think the kids can go 3 or 5 days a week. They have a different program in the summer then during the school year.

Frying Pan Park has camps all summer, morning or afternoon, and it's a very cool place. Depending on where you live that might be a fun option if your kid likes animals and being outside -

Not to discourage you, but just so you don't get frustrated: You may find that, this close to summer, many camps and programs are already full.

Check out your county or city recreation department -- these often have the most cost-effective camps etc. If you're in Fairfax County, the information's all in the ParkTakes catalog, which is online at the county web site. I'm sure Arlington, Alexandria, etc. all have similar offerings.

Another source for lots and lots of camp and program info is the free parenting magazines available at some grocery stores; I always see them by the exits on racks. Titles like No.Va. Families, etc. I know for certain that Whole Foods stores carry several of these. These magazines are mostly just listings of paid camps and programs so they might save you hunting through the phone book.

Dear S.,
Check out www.our-kids.com for the DC metro are and they have a huge list of seasonal activites including camps/classes. Also there is always Gymboree amd My Gym with various locations through out NoVA. www.gymboreeclasses.com Plus with those places you can do a free trial class to see how your 3 yr old would like them etc. www.my-gym.com
As for all the rec centers in the area, they are fairly inexpensive and the website is www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks
they list all the classes and camps, and you're not too late, regitration just started May 19th for summer classes. And if you're looking for playgroups I go to a greta one on Thursdays in Burke on Old Keene Mill Rd, so it's also right next to Springfield and Annandale. We meet from 10am-noon but of course you can come and go as needed. All ages from a couple babies to age 5/6. During the summer we'll pick different parks to meet at and have moms nights out etc. For more info just ask and aslo there's another moms group I go to on Wed. www.myspace.com/kirkwoodmops
Good Luck
