We have a beautiful lil girl she will be 6 months july 13th. at 1 month our ped put her on zantac for acid reflux and having us put cereal in every bottle to thicken it up. she then heard a mumur and sent us to have it checked out. she did have an open val and we was told come back in 6 months and if it didn't close on it's on they would close it. at 5.5 months she told us we could start some foods. and she just loved that well yesterday when i had my oldest at the peds i just asked to have my daughter weighed she was 23 pounds i just about died. she didn't seem to worry about her weight gain at all. i am worried when i go back to cardo in Aug they will. i think all the cereal in her bottle is what put her weight on so fast.i just wanted to see if anyone else had chunky babies at 6 months old. i am sure when she starts to crawl and walk she'll slim down some. she just started sitting unsupported and tries so hard to crawl but just not yet.

What can I do next?

I have three kids and all of them had reflux. My youngest had it the worst. He was on Zantac and Prevacid together plus cereal at 6 weeks. We called him "Biggie, Big" because he was huge. Once he started walking, he slimmed down. He went from the 90% weight and 75% height at 12 months to the 50% height and weight at 3 years old.

Hi H.,

I have 4 children myself and I can honestly say that a chunky 6-month old is not unusual! When they first come home from the hospital they lose weight, but then when they start food, they get chubby. My doctor has always said that as long as they are sleeping, eating well and healthy in general, it is not a problem.
You can't put a 6 month old on a diet and usually they stop eating when they are full. 2 of my kids were chubby and 2 were slimmer and they were the ones I worried about! If the Cardiologist has a question or concern, advise them to speak to your pediatrician and make sure the ped knows the whole situation.

Hi H. - I have two boys, both with AR and both had Rice Cereal in with their formula. My older one, now over two, was chunky, but has he grew, he slimmed down. I think some babies add on weight and look like little Butterball Turkeys and then as they get more active, they tend to slim down to normal.

My other son, now 6 months goes in for his 6 mo. c/u on Tuesday and I won't be surprised if he is up over 20 lbs too.

Try not to worry. Always offer healthy foods and the occasional treat and your daughter should be fine. Good Luck!

I wouldn't worry about it too much. My daughter was huge. she was big when I had her so the doctors didn't seem too concerned that she was a big rollie pollie baby. She is almost 2.5 now and she is about 30 pounds. She started slimming down dramatically when she started to crawl, walk and run around. The more she grew in height the more she became more proportionate. I look at pics of her from when she was an infant and can't believe that she was that big. I'm sure your baby will be fine. If the doctor is not concerned with it at this point than I wouldn't be either.

I have a 4 year old son whom I had to do the same thing with. He did gain weight. The Dr. assured me that he was ok. My son will be 5 at the end of the month. He is 43 inches tall and only 44 lbs. The Dr. said he looks great! I worried with the weight issue only because my husband and I are both bigger bodied with underactive thyroids. I probably went overboard with it. But I worried needlessly. Good luck and God bless, all will work out!

Our now 4 year old was very very chubby- I mean people stopped to stare chubby. She was breastfed only. We did not worry, neither did her ped, and now she is absolutely perfect weight for height, if not slim. The very bright side is if your baby is gaining that much weight, its a strong indication the open valve is not an issue- I worked with heart babies and those with problems could not gain weight well.

If your pediatrician wasn't too worried about it, try not to worry yet. My nephew is 4 month old now. At his 3 month checkup he was already over 18 pounds. I think it depends on the child and how consistently they put the weight on. Your pediatrician would have access to that information and is tracking her growth. Unless she put most of the weight on in 1 month, I wouldn't worry yet. It sounds like it may just be normal for your daughter. All children are different, too, so you can't gauge normal growth for your daughter by how your other children grew. My daughter grew well and was always around the 80-90 percentiles. My son had a few problems at first but since the problems were worked out, he has steadily been growing at the 50th percentile.

It sounds like you have had enough to worry about with your little girl. This doesn't really sound like something to let yourself get upset about. If you really feel there is a problem, ask your doctor about it again. Your doctor can check her chart and tell you whether she has been steadily growing at a certain percentage or how much or a change there has been in your daughter's growth pattern. If you have her weight and height information for the past several months, you can check for growth charts on the internet or in different baby books and plot the chart yourself to see if she is on a regular growth pattern. Then if you have further questions or concerns, by all means talk to the doctor and tell them your concerns. If you are not satisfied with your doctor's answers, you can always get a second opinion.
