Seeking Solution to a 2-Week Old Cough!

My 10 month old has had a nasty cough - first congestion, then runny nose, now back to congestions. She sounds like she's purring when she breathes sometimes. She doesn't have a fever and the cough isn't all day. We've been using a warm mist humidifier and euculyptus chest rub daily during naps and nighttime. Does this warrant a trip to the ped? Or can we do something different at home?

What can I do next?

If it has been two weeks, please take your little one to the doctor...my rule of thumb with anything is if it's not gone in fours days, go to the doctor (as advised by NICU nurses and son's Pedi).

My son used to get sick like this ALL the time and while it may be nothing, it could be something if it's not gone yet. In my opinion, finding our your little one is okay is worth that co-pay.

It also, sounds like you're doing everything to make her comfy so, it would be best to get a doc's thoughts on how to get rid of it.

Good Luck.

a could should only last 5-7 days. this could be something worse. i would reccamend using a cool mist humidafire insteadd (unless her dr says to use it). my daughter had the same cold like symptoms your daughter had for 2 months and they found out she had asthma and that it would get irritated when shes sick. i would deffinately take her into her dr not the er because they will just say its a cold. good luck!

Since it has persisted for so long I would go cal your Dr. and see what they have to say. It will give you peace of mind and they will help you get it under control. Anything that persists more than 3 to 5 days without getting better at least warrants a call to her Dr. Good luck!

we do steam baths to loosen up the secretions. it's hard to get a little one to blow their nose or cough it up. what am i saying? a 10 month old? ok, it's near impossible. along with going to the doctor (make sure he doesn't need antibiotics), you could do a steam bath in the morning and evening. if he doesn't like sitting in the hot water, sit in the bathroom with the hot shower running and make a sauna. pat his back to encourage loosening the secretions and coughing. wipe his nose frequently. have ice cold water in there for you to drink too and don't dress too warmly so you don't over heat.

hang in there. it can be a lot of work. i just went through it for a whole week with 3 kids. :(
