I understand wanting a house and not an apt. My husband and I are hoping to be back in a house in a year or so!
Have you tried looking for a house to rent? Perhaps you can even find one that is rent-to-own!
For starts I know this weird but all things are possible. I am a single mom of two children ages 1 and 6. I have full custody of my son but joint for my daughter. I want a HOUSE so that my kids can have a back yard and front yard to play in but I know my credit it awful. Wondering if maybe there is another single mother that wants the same and would consider getting a home together so that our kids can have a HOUSE and no longer an apt. I am a very easy going person. I work full time and at the moment have no ineterst in a relationship as I am putting all of my time into my kids and my job.

Just a comment about Habitat for Humanity- They have a five year waiting list, and you have to volunteer 500 hours towards building your own home. But it is still worth it to get on the list for the future.
Good luck!
No advice, just encouragement. This is such a great idea, and it's not really weird, a lot of people live in communities or share/co-housing situations. have you done a search online on this topic?
Try contacting Habitat for Humanity. I'm not sure the requirements as far as your credit is concerned, but they specialize in helping L. income families get into new houses, and the interest rates for the mortgages are really L.. I do believe you have to volunteer a certain amount of time to help build it though.
If your unable to purchase a house, have you looked into renting one?
I have a similar situation, I wanted to recommend renting a duplex with a back yard, not as good as a house but a million times better than an apartment, it gives chance for a little pool, laying out in sunshine, having a garden, and bar-b-que, no front yard but you can make your little backyard into a little oasis.
