The Haven in (I think) Pontiac, St. Aloysius shelter in Detroit, there is also a women's shelter for women with children just off of Michigan Ave. in Westland at the old Eloise Hospital site, but I don't know the name of that one.
Hi there
I am looking to find a women's shelter that I can donate some womens clothes and kids toys to. My son just had a birthday and I realised just how many toys we have (too many). Thought about selling them on craigslist but decided it would be really nice to help people less fortunate than us. I really would like to donate them to a womens shelter (or charity that helps families who've been affected by domestic violence) to help them get back on their feet and give some less fortunate kids a little bit of fun. If anyone knows of any please let me know.
Thanks

Lighthouse of Oakland County in Pontiac would welcome donations. It houses women and children who are trying to get established and back on their feet. I volunteered there last year, and they were most appreciative for any donations.
Common Ground Shelter in Royal Oak.
I always donate to First Step. The branch I always go to is in Plymouth, but I'm pretty sure they have a couple other locations. (You have to be patient when trying to get one of their locations, of course. Their security is kinda tight.)
There is a shelter in Pontiac called Grace centers of hope. They have a nursery that I donate supplies for around Christmas each year. They are Christian based for people who have addictions and for battered women. Tax deductable.
There's Turning Point shelter in Mt. Clemens. The thrift shop "Second Hand Rose" is associated with them.
In Detroit there's Alternatives for Girls. That's more of a shelter for at-risk girls of all ages. Not sure if they accept donated goods or not, but I would think so.
There's a shelter in Pontiac as well, but I'm drawing a blank on it. Alternatives for Girls would probably know, so if you call them and they can't use your stuff, ask them for other shelters.
I know of two places in Pontiac that would love to have your used or unused items. They are the Lighthouse and Haven. Both are womens shelters that believe in helping women get back on their feet from either abusive relationships or just trying to better themselves (this is an explanation in a nutshell). I have given items to Lighthouse before and they have been overjoyed with the donations. I know you have to call both places to set up a time to drop them off, but as I said before, with my experiences they are more than appreciative with the donations. Have a great day!

Have you checked online? I know you can search this and you can find local shelters in your area. I believe there is one in Southfield that helps families, too. The name just escapes me as I only just woke up! :)
Hello M., I think that's wonderful. I know of a shelter on Michigan Ave., just east of Merriman. It is for woman and children. That is in Westland. If you would like the number I could get it for you. God bless! Mrs. Keaton
M.,
Another good resource is Freecycle. This group is sponsored through Yahoo Groups and it is a way to keep things out of landfills. Baby toys and clothes are always a desperately needed item and often times go as quickly as you post them.
You can find more information here -

Good luck!

My sister works at one in Monroe.. PM me and I can give you the contact info if you'd like.
HAVEN is a place that you should look into. I've done a lot of volunteer work in their domestic violence shelter, and they are a WONDERFUL organization.
I do believe, however, that items need to be brand new as they do not have a tremendous amount of storage space.
Hi M. --
This is very nice of you. You might want to sell them and donate the money to the shelter. The comment someone posted about new items is correct.
Here is HAVEN's wish list.

HAVEN's shelter provides three meals and living supplies to our residents each day. We typically house 45 people in the shelter. Due to a lack of space, we can only accept new items.
We also accept used cell phones in working order. Please drop off donated cell phones at the HAVEN administrative offices.

M.,
Welcome to Michigan!!! I am not sure where you live so you will have to decide if you can do this. Grace Centers of Hope has a women's shelter and a kids center, along with programs for drug addicts and alcolholics. They take clothes and toys not only for the shelters but they opperate several thrifts stores as well. The adults who have been rehabilitated run the stores so the proffitts actually go back into their ministry. The stores are called Rescued Treasures. They are located in Waterford and Sterling Heights. They have pick up service or you can drop them off yourself. Any donation is tax deductable, which is also nice. Pastor Kent Clark is the in charge person and has worked their for years. They are located in downtown Pontiac and have quite the history with the city. I have been involved with this organization since I was about 12 as they were originally the Pontiac Rescue Mission. Many lives have been changed through this wonderful ministry of hope, and many women and children have found shelter here and gone on to live very changed lives!!! They are building up a very torn down and oppressed city, one house at a time. I don't have their phone number but you can check out their website and I hope that you do.
