Seeking Pediatrician Sympathetic to Delaying Immunizations

I live in Richardson and am about to be a first time mom. I am very discouraged by all my recent pediatrician interviews. I do not agree with the current immunization schedule and would really like to find a pediatrician that is supportive of our decisions, while still giving us information that will keep our son safe. We have not decided what we will do as far as long term care goes, but for at least the first 6 months I dont feel my son should receive any vaccinations. If you have experienced this yourself and have your own alternative vaccination schedule, I would love to know what that is as well. Thanks so much in advance!

So What Happened?

I just went and met the doctors at Raintree Pediatrics in Allen, next to Allen Presbyterian. It is a drive for us, but I think it is going to be worth it! There are 2 doctors there; Dr. Smith (female) and Dr. Cook (male). Also there is a nurse practicioner, Sabrina and a PA that was not able to be at the "meet the doctor" night. I have 2 friends that take their children there and love it. One friend takes both her kids to Sabrina and another to Dr. Smith. I have heard that the 2 of them are a little more understanding about the whole delayed vaccine issue, although they will all tell you that it is the best thing to do. Basically they all said that they will tell you what they think you should do, but in the end, it is your child and you can make the decisions. HOWEVER, if you decide to take an alternate vaccine schedule they will NOT tell you how to do that. You will need to provide the schedule. All in all, they really seemed much warmer and willing to work with us than the other docs I had interviewed.

So, talk to your friends, do research and find a schedule that works for you. I have not found just the right thing yet. I am delaying AT LEAST 6 months and further depending on his childcare situation. I would like to wait at least a year. Thanks for all the advice!

E.,

I know exactly where you are coming from....I interviewed several Pediatricians looking for the perfect one that would respect our decision on vaccinations. We have been going to Dr. John Porter in Richardson...while he will tell you which ones he thinks are most important for your childs health, he does respect the decision to delay. We have been using the same method...from the same book that K. mentioned earlier, and it has worked for us. Dr. Porter is located @ Floyd & Arapaho. His number ###-###-####. He and Dr. Peck(also in his office) are wonderful.

I don't have a physician referral but I will tell you, You are well within your rights to delay immunization. I have six children and one is handi capped. I just recently decided against immunizations after thorough research. Especially concerning Mercury (Thimerasol) they use as preservative. God has shown me so much. I wish I had of studied before I ignorantly put my child up there to be injected. I think everyone has to make their own decision...I am just saying...please educate yourself. My eyes have been opened to so much concerning the medical community. You stand up for what you feel in your gut and don't let anyone make you feel guilty. Also, you can order forms from Austin exempting your child from immunizations for reasons of religion or conscience. The library has tons of books on the pros and/or cons of immunizations.

Hi E.,

I have 2 boys (3 1/2yrs. and 4 months) and neither one of them are vaccinated. My oldest has had only one virus in his entire life at 15 months old. Not one other sickness. My 4 month old is just as healthy so far. I truly believe it is due to not breaking down their immune system with the vaccinations. We love our pediatrician in Allen. We see Amber Jones, PA at the Raintree Pediatric Office. At this point my boys will not be vaccinated and my oldest has attended a Mother's Day Out program. I have waivers from the state saying we don't vaccinate. Please email if you would like to talk further. Please stand by your decision for your little one.

E.,

You are NOT alone. I too have decided to delay and am STRONGLY leaning towards no longer vax'ing. My Ped. has given me a very hard time with it...and for now has let up however wants me to start vax'ing my twins by the age of 3 again. We did vax till they were 9 mos (last time was prior to that) and we had delayed and seperated the vax's. I am also wanting to find another Ped. who will respect my decision to NOT vax because it is what I am leaning toward. I am going to look into the names that have been mentioned to you and please keep me posted if you find someone you like and that respects what you are doing. I also use only organic and natural products with my children and have a hard time with my Dr agreeing to the supplements and vitamins I give them. I truly believe that it has helped keep them healthy and it is why I continue with what I give them. They have been sick ONE time and I also think that it was due to thier immune systems being lower becuase of the vaccines they had rec'd. Anyway, good luck to you and if you ever want to talk, please message me!

I use Dr. Halsell near Presby Dallas. She told me that her goal is that children be vaccinated by the time they enter school but she is very willing to discuss with you and work on your own schedule. We did the first round of vaccines one at a time and have not done any more. My daughter is 10 months old so she should have had 3 rounds at this time. At this point we are not going to vaccinate further for another year but are undecided as to what we will do in the long term.

There are tons of books and websites out there. It is really a confusing issue. To balance out our medical treatment, we see a wonderful pediatric chiropractor as well.

Hi E.,
I understand your frustration. I also used an alternative vaccine schedule, actually still am, and just want to warn you not to worry yourself too crazy. I was a basket case for most of my first daughters birth to 18 months....I have relaxed with my second probably due to being more comfortable with my decisions and confident we are doing what we think is best. First I would like to recommend you check out the book "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Children's Vaccinations" by Stephanie Cave and Deborah Mitchell; written by a pediatrician...it gives suggestions to reduce reactions...how to get them, what to take before and after, etc.

We currently see the doctors at All About Children Pediatrics in McKinney. Both are supportive and even stated at Meet the Doctor Night that they would rather you have a doctor than to turn you away and not have one. My first child---just turned 2--is behind only three now, and my youngest is behind by six or so...she gets viruses quite frequently so we have delayed her more than our first. One thing about this office is they do not even suggest vaccinations until after 2 months of age which was something I had not found anywhere else.

As for our own schedule....we just have a rule that our children do not get more than two at a time...I do not do the combo shots except for DTaP, MMR (couldn't find it separated, but waited until my daughter was 18 months and only gave that one to her and she hasn't had any since and she just turned 2). I don't do the PediaRx, or whatever other ones they are pushing now. In the book I suggested, she will even tell you which to get together if you chose that route, although her suggestion is to do one at a time. I actually have typed out her recommendations to keep for quick reference...if you want it just tell me where to email it.

Good luck and remember your lil' one is not only yours. God has his best interest at heart...if you don't cling to this, you may drive yourself crazy...I almost did.

Feel free to keep in contact...I will share whatever may help you.

Dear E.,
I was just looking over my old files and i came across your request for recommendations for a pediatrician who is sympathetic to delayed immunizations. I have a 6month old who hasn't had any shots yet. I am looking for exactly the same thing and i live close enough to Richardson(preston & Frankford)and i was wondering if you had any luck finding such a pediatrician. I will look into the list that you recieved from the moms but i was also wondering if you have any feedback on the list or any other doctors you may have come across. Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you,M.
