Does anyone know of a pediatrician near the Birmingham area that is willing to work with an alternative immunization schedule? I have been going in circles trying to find a pediatrician in our area that does it, but I have yet to find one. We are willing to drive an hour if we have to!

What can I do next?

Good for you for doing what you believe is best for your kids even though "bucking the norm" is not the easiest route, for sure. I am in Oklahoma and have yet to find a pediatrician who is supportive of my alternative vaccination schedules, but I do it anyway. I dread going to the doctor for shots because they always tell me how many vaccines "behind" schedule we are, and how he needs to get this one, this one, this one, and this one today while he's there. I just grit my teeth, smile, and say, "Well, today we just want to do this one and this one. That's it. We'll come back another time for the others." and then that's really all they can do - the ones you've given permission for. I'm thinking I'll go to the health department for the next ones just to see if that's any easier.
For school, I picked up a vaccine exemption form from the health dept. and made several copies for future years, little brother etc. I fill it out, explaining which ones we've skipped or postponed and why, and give it to the school when we enroll. So far I've only had to present it once per child, when we started pre-K and then again when we switched schools once due to moving. I've found it's not an easy road, but it's worth it to me, to know I'm not just blindly following the crowd, but doing what's best for our particular children.

Hi, My grandchildren go to a doctor in Homewood. This office did not tell us in any way what we should do as far as not getting the kids vaccinated, but after we got the paperwork, we've had no problems with the kids recieving Well-Checkups without vaccinations. We called the health department, I think??, and had to go downtown and sign a form stating that we did not want vaccinations due to religious reasons. It's hard to get an exemption for medical reasons. Please feel free to email me if you need additional information such as the doctor's name. (____@____.com) I really like this doctor and don't want to get them in any trouble. I think there has been alot of pressure lately put on doctors where vaccinations are concerned.

HI C.,
I do not live in your area, but I can let you know how we broached the subject with our ped.
Using "The Vaccine Book" by Dr Sears as a reference, we made copies of both the alternative vaccine schedule and the regular vaccine schedule that at posted in the book. The dr said that was fine with her, as long as he gets all of the vaccines.
The point is that we had a good reference, and weren't just being crackpots.
Good luck!
