Seeking Organizational Ideas

I am organizing different things in my home and have came to the video collection that we have. I have put them in a cabinet on the top shelf so the kids can not reach them but did not like that because they were double/triple stacked and I was unable to see all of them. I then moved them to a chest which the TV sits on but that now is not working too well becuase I have to open the drawers and they just are not very handy or organized. None of these seem to be the correct spot for them. Just wondering I guess how all you moms out there organize your videos/dvds so they are easily accessable.

What can I do next?

My very favorite is a cabinet that holds rows of them on shelves and also has shelves on the doors that close over the other shelves to cover them and make a nice looking cabinet. (I don't think that description sounds very good--this is not my strong point.) Anyway, we have found a few of these at garage sales, etc... and we love them for videos and also for paperbacks, which are just a large a problem for us.

We also put all of our DVD into CD/DVD holders.
We had so many we got a few holders.

One for Family/Kids, Action/Military, Comedy, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Drama/mystery, and my Husband's "Odd" DVD collection (you know the movies that are so bad men love them)

Works well, when we want to watch a movie...we just go to the genre we are in the mood for, or the company wants. We hand them the DVD case and they can page through and pick!

Videos, we put in a closet, but made a list of the ones we have, so we don't have to always open the door to find them, we just look at the list to see if anything peaks our interest.

I would make a trip to IKEA. We were stumped on the same thing, and I found the PERFECT horizontal cabinet to go over our TV. It was a pain to hang, but totally affordable and fit the job, so to me it was worth it. But it allows us to have all our Disney VHSs (about 40 or so) vertically on the top shelf so we can read all the titles, and then it has cubbies for the DVDs, video games, and other accessories. Without seeing your space I can't say if that would work for you, but I've found IKEA to have pretty much anything I need for organizing. Good luck!

We have a lot of DVDs, CDs, and videogames, so we bought three shelving units with adjustable shelves and glass doors from IKEA that you can either stand on the floor, or attach to your wall. We put them up on the wall, and have one for games and cds, two for dvds. It's nice because you can see what's in there, and they're up out of reach of the kids.

Buy some attractive boxes that are meant for media/dvds. You can label them on the front so you'll know what types of movies are inside. The boxes can be stacked on your entertainment center and will look really attractive.

I put all the DVDs into a CD holder and threw away all the cases. The movies never got put back in the cases.
This way we have to flip through them but it has saved space and works for us.

I like to use woven baskets I get from Michael's. They look nice on a shelf and can easily be pulled down to sort through. I would also go through the videos and sort the favorites into one basket and maybe put the not so favorites in a drawer. I also keep some DVDs in the CD flip books (these are mostly ones that my brother has ripped from Disney movies or other movies that my sister already had).

I keep mine in storage tubs that I bought at Target. (Measure the shelf you're going to keep them on before you go shopping.) They are stacked with the titles up, so I can see everything when I get out the tub. For me, keeping the tubs on shelves in the credenza works well, but you could keep them on an open shelf, too.

I bought a big CD holder - almost like a binder, and put them all in there and threw away the cases. It takes up a lot less room and you can organize your DVD's in there however you like. This works great if you have a DVD player in the car too - just bring the case along and you don't end up with DVD cases all over the floor.
I still have a ton of VHS movies that I put on a shallow shelf I got at a retail store closing - it was a candle display but works perfectly for videos.

We put all of our dvds in a cd holder. That way, you can just flip thru to find the one you want and our daughter can look thru it easily without making a mess. Then we just put all the dvd holders into storage.
