Seeking Opinion About Schools

Does anyone have any opinions/knowledge about New City School or the College schools? I am trying to make a decision about which school would be best for my son,who may be starting kindergarten in the fall. He has a hard time in group situations, and I am looking for an environment that really supports and helps each child reach their potential. I am not so keen on passive learning and memorizations that is the learning style in the public school system. I am hoping to find an environment that encourages active exploration, and real learning.

Thanks for any input.

I think that the critical thinng is to visit each school with your child. We looked at New City School, College School and also Saint Michaels's in Clayton which uses the Regio Emilia approach. All were very hands-on and seemed good. The most crucial thing seems to be to find a philosophy that you support and a school and atmosphere which is a match for your child and family.

Good luck.

my brother went to New City a long time ago...Its a wonderful school W/ a great reputation. I believe they are very good at making sure they have a diverse school...they have alot of students that are adopted from other countries.

I attended a New City open house last year, and loved it!
The classrooms have couches and huge pillows on the floor, as well as desks...students call teachers by their 1st name, they go on tons of field trips a year...which cost the parents more money...also seems the parents were very active in the school. All the above can be yours for Eleven Thousand Dollars A Year!!!

Honestly...even if your stinking rich...that is way too much money for a kindergarten student. But, it's your money!
If i were you and could afford the Collage or New City school, I'd wait till 2nd or 3rd grade. See how your child does in a 'conventional' school setting. He may thrive and wind up surprising you.

We are also looking into the college school for our daughter. She will be in kindergarten in the fall. Great school. Wish someone who has a kid there, could give some insight.
