I am trying to locate a reading tutor for my 7 1/2 year old son for the summer (and probably into the next school year also) in the Richardson/Garland/Plano area (either my home or theirs). I am NOT interetested in the "chain" educational centers such as Sylvan, Kumon, etc. (for my own reasons). I would like someone trained in multisensory educational methods of reading that can make this *FUN* for my son. I would also like for this person to have experience/education in dealing with dsylexia and/or other forms of reading disabilities.
My son is completing the first grade this year and is sigificantly behind in reading. He has not been diagnosed with dsylexia (however, I will be getting him tested outside of the school system). He is receiving all of the services from PISD that he would if he was diagnosed with dyslexia and it only increased his reading level from PP1 to PP2. My son displays a lot of the characteristics of dyslexia and he has difficulty with phonological awareness and blending of sounds. However he is doing fine in math and really enjoys math.

I have found a Certified Academic Language Therapist who is near me and will be taking my son to her this week for an evaluation. She offers private and semi-private reading instruction and has a group starting this summer that she feels my son would fit into and the program will continue throughout the next 2 years as necessary.
She utilizes the Take Flight: An Intervention for Students with Dyslexia (Take Flight) teaching model, which was written by the Education Team at the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders of Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC) in Dallas for use by academic language therapists with children seven years or older with developmental dyslexia. Take Flight was developed to enable students with dyslexia to achieve and maintain better sight word recognition, reading fluency, reading comprehension, as well as aid in the transition from a therapy setting to “real world” learning. Take Flight contains the five components of effective reading instruction supported by the National Reading Panel research meta-analysis and mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act, including: (1) phonemic awareness,(2) phonics, (3) vocabulary, (4) fluency and (5) comprehension.
We will also get my son tested for dyslexia and related learning differences this summer.

I would check with your Elementary School for Recommendations. There is also a college that uses its teaching students to do reading classes for youngsters - I'm not sure which university though. Good luck.

Contact the special education at his school and inquire if she will or knows someone that would like to earn extra money tutoring your child. North Texas State or Texas Women's has a master's education program that might be of help.

I recommend checking out the Shelton School. They specialize in Dyslexia and will have summer camps. They are located at Arapaho/Hillcrest. I am sure they will have summer reading program..in fact, I know they have a reading program on Saturdays for Dyslexic children. See what else they have!
A lot of times boys eye sight is not developed enough to handle reading. Reading requires a lot of focus and maturity. I dealt with very similar situations in public school. It requires a lot of patience and a stress free environment.
Don't be too quick to diagnose it as dyslexia. My 2nd son had trouble reading and did not become a confident reader until late 2nd grade; while my 1st born read at 4 years old. It is often common for boys to be late readers.
One year I had an entire class of 2nd graders that could not read (mostly boys).
Many times they reach the age of 9-10 years old and make great leaps in reading and quickly achieve more in a short time. So protecting his self-esteem during this phase is so important.
I would make sure to read to him a lot of books at or above his level so that he is hearing great stories and increasing his vocabulary and comprehension skills. Don't let him miss out on great stories because he is not reading at grade level. This is such a simple low-cost thing to do: read-aloud to our kiddos on a consistent basis.
Memorize fun poems: Shel Silverstein has hilarious ones. He will be learning the patterns of language which will also transfer into his reading.

My sister is a learning therapist for Mckinney school district. She completed the program through SMU and Scottish Rite. She does a multi sensory summer program with another LT... They do it as a sort of camp so kids are feeling like they are not learning but also having fun. Her name is Angela. Let me know if you want her contact info.
