I am looking to connect with other moms who have children with special needs. I have an 11 yr old boy who is ADHD, ODD, and Bipolar. I would really love to chat and get any ideas on how to help my son as well as give ideas as well.

What can I do next?

I also am a mom of special needs children. 4 out of my 5 are special needs. My daughter(20) is bipolar with ptsd. My 17 year old son is dyslexic, my 16 year old is considered mentally retarded, and my 15 year old is ADHD with ODD. So if there is any specific things you need answers to please dont hesitate to contact me.

I also have a son with Bipolar disorder and he has some oppositional defiant behaviors. He is 8 almost 9. I have had issues with him at school. I would really like ideas on how to handle it. I have him on medication but he has adverse side effects so they have to lower the dose and then he acts out. Its a constant struggle. He's in therapy and sees a psychiatrist as well. He has been going under treatment for almost 4 years. I also have 3 other children so it makes for a challange.

Hello,
I too have two sons with ADHD and one with Bipolar disorder. My greatest help came from the MHA organization in Mt. Kisco. They are accross from the hospital I think on Grove Street. I had a really hard time understanding that it wasn't my fault that they werte both this way. It is very important that you keep them on a strict schedule so that they know what is expected and when. It helps alot with the younger kids too. My kids (i have 3) are all very schedule oriented and we do not deviate very often because when I do all H breaks loose and they can't handle the change. I sat down with both of my boys and made a list of everything that they can do by themselves. Then we made a list of things that they need help with. This list stays on the fridge and once a week we review it to see if they have added anything new to the can do myself list. I work full time and have a really hard time too. You just need to understand that with Bipolar the ups and downs can be gradual or severe and what to look for. My son is now in a special school and has been doing better. I live in Ossining and the district pays for it. If you would like to know where he is going to school let me know. If your Bipolar son is having problems in a public school this place is the greates. Is he Classified as Special Ed or a even Modified? If not he probably would benefit form the extra care. Let me know how it goes.

I totally understand what you are going through. My oldest has been diagnosed with autism, pdd, adhd, and a phonological processing disorder. My youngest has adhd, and we are going through evals. right now, possibly bi-polar too. My 10 yr. old is stuck in the middle, and she has a hard timeealing with her brothers needs. I have 3 children in all and I cannot stress the importance of a daily routine! I t truly helps them, and even better, it can be a sanity saver for you. Children with these type of problems do very well with consistency in their routines. (I know that my guys go absolutly haywire without having the stability and comfort that a routine provides). Also, is your school district involved? I know it can be hard, but having an IEP in place can be very helpfull too. if you ever need to talk, let me know. It can be a lonely world out there for mom's with special needs children. Take care.
