My first experience with Labor and Delivery was horrible. I want to find a midwife in the area. Please share who you see and how your birth experience was. Where did you deliver, etc.

I know of an excellent Doula in the area and she may know of other midwives. Especially as this one is very health-conscious.
A doula is a non-medical assistant who provides various forms of non-medical support (physical, emotional and informed choice) in the childbirth process. Based on a particular doulas training and background, the doula may offer support during prenatal care, during childbirth and/or during the postpartum period. A birth doula is a continuous care provider for labor in many settings. Thus a labor doula may attend a home birth or might attend the parturient woman during labor at home and continue while in transport and then complete supporting the birth at a hospital or a birth center.
I am not sure if this person has done much 'home birthing' but I know her personally and she is wonderful. If I have baby #2, I will be calling her! :)

Are you planning to deliver at a hospital with a midwife or have a homebirth?
ABC Providence I think it's called is suppposed to be wonderful with midwives if you are looking for a birth center in the hospital.
If you are looking for a homebirth, there are many midwives in the area that do homebirth.. check out birth network for a list.
Dr. Cayle in Shelby Township at the Cayle Clinic does some alternative birthing methods at Beaumont Hospital..
I had a homebirth and it was wonderful! My water broke at home at 3pm and my son was born at 10:30pm.. I was able to take a shower and climb into my own bed where I basically stayed for 2 weeks... feel free to PM me for more info. I had no tearing, no intervention and the pain was not what people think it might be.
I see the midwives at Oakland-Macomb OBGYN in Troy. I had a wonderful birth experience with them and delivered at Troy Beaumont.
I did it all natural, no drugs (except the pitocin they used to induce me because I developed Choleostasis).
I had a great labor, the wishes in my birth plan were followed closely. I had a lot of support from my husband, family members, my midwife, and the nurse during labor. I had 4 hours of labor and 2 hours of pushing and delivered a 9lb 1oz little boy (big boy!).
Because of my small size (5'3", 115lbs) and my son's large size, I did tear and also had to be cut. I also hemorrhaged after he was born, so thank goodness I delivered in the hospital. The doctors from the practice were in the building and did the D&C following the birth.
The midwvies are open to and supportive of most things (i.e. drug-free, epidurals, birthing balls, laboring in tub/shower, etc.) This was great for me because I knew exactly what I wanted to do from the start and they supported me every step of the way. I attribute my successful natural birth to their support and encouragement!
I'm also thinking about #2 and will DEFINITELY use the midwives again.

I delivered both my sons naturally with a midwife, the first was born in England, the second was born at Providence alternative birth unit in Southfield 3 years ago, and I loved the experience. I had no drugs with either and no cutting or tearing. My midwife unfortunately has since moved to South Carolina but she practiced out of Metro partners for womens Health who were based in Livonia, they had more than one midwife there. You can get a list from providence hospital of the midwives that work out of the alternative birth unit now. I would highly recommend you check it out. I went in at about 3am, my son was born around 7.30am and I went home that day around dinner time. They have rooms available with spa baths for during labor, and the beds there are just regular queen sized beds. It is a very relaxed setting but within easy reach of the regular labor and delivery and O.R for any emergency. Also you don't have to move rooms, the whole experience is in one room and you are not moved after the birth. You can stay in the unit for up to 24 hours after the birth, but if you want to stay longer they will move you to a regular labor and delivery recovery room. Whatever you decide, good luck with your next birthing experience, I hope it is all you want it to be.
metro partners :) I didnt do home deliver but did the Alternative Birth Center Providence HIGHLY RECOMMEND - plus the hospital is on the same floor and after 16 hours I had to go over there :( but they know your an ABC patient and let you continue most all your natural ways and your midwife and or doctor still deliver and everything. have fun!
