where is he now? at a private school in nassau (bahamas)?

I would think that there should be someone to talk to at his current school, especially if it is a private school. how about other parents (parents of his friends)?

How 'ready' is he to go off? what can you afford? I ask this because there are private boarding schools (college prepatory)in the USA that have what is called a PG year- the PG stands for Post Graduate, I do believe, and it is a special program to give one more year of high school to students to really prepare them for college/university. They also have advisors to help prepare college applications & to really help in choosing colleges/universities...
There is even financial aid & scholarships for this one year, I do believe. One school that I know has this program (I'm sure you could google to find more) is

Hi D.! When my daughter graduated from high school, I was so sure that she was going to stay in her hometown and go to a local college until one day she announced that she wanted to go away for college. It was the best thing that she ever did. Not only did it mature her, but it made her the responsible adult she is today. All the colleges offer free tours of their campus and dorms. I suggest you go with your son to these college tours that are usually given by students. There he can get a feel for the university and see if it is a fit for him, it will also help decide if he really does want to go away from his hometown or not. My daughter ended up picking a school that was about a 4 hour drive from our home. This was perfect, she was away, but if she wanted to come home for a weekend, it was not a big deal. I wish you and your son all the luck in the world.

There is a college fair today in Miami today, I think you can get alot of these questions answered. I'm taking my daughter later today.
