Dear L.,

Your baby is too young for any kind of 'food' other than breastmilk or formula. If you are worried about weight gain supplement the breastmilk by giving a bottle of formula after you nurse. However if you are nursing whenever your baby is hungry you should be producing plenty of milk. Make sure you are drinking a glass of water every time you nurse to insure you are not getting dehydrated. Talk to your pediatrician before you introduce any food.

how do you know your milk is not enough? is he producing wet and dirty diapers? this is the way to tell, not if he is constantly nursing, because that is normal. It may be a growth spurt. he is much to young for food.

You might want to look into La Leche League, they have meetings in your area (I know that one meets at the Mary Jacobs Library in Rocky Hill on the second and 4th Wednesdays of each month at 9:30 a.m.). That is a very helpful place to find information on breastfeeding and feeding issues for babies and toddlers. It is very rare to not have enough milk to feed your baby. Please consider talking to a lactation consultant or a volunteer from La Leche League. Your baby is too young for other foods.
