My old vacuum bit the dust and I am in need of a new one. After reading consumer reports, nothing jumped out at me - anyonoe out there have one they love and recommend (or conversely, one that they hate or wish they didnt; get?).

Any input appreciated.
Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

thanks everyone for your input - so many of you responded that you love your Dyson that I got one too - I got the cannister one, since the upright one was too heavy for my wrist (which sometimes acts up). And - I love it too!

I have a dyson, and i absloutly love it. It has lasted over 2 years, i love the bagless, and only 1 filter ( that you take out and wash). I would clean pellet stove ash with it, food, dog hair, you name it it cleaned it up. I would swear by dyson. It was a bit expensive but before we had a cheap one and it lasted maybe 3 months. Good Luck!

Dyson all the way! i know they are expensive but that thing is a work of sheer genius plus a great warrenty. we went with the Dyson Animal Ball becuz we have pets and all girls with long hair. It works soooo good when i sprinkle the carpet deodorizer and vacuum practically it all came up. it is very well engineered. its very easy to use and to clean. its medium weight i can carry it up and down alllll our stairs. look for sales or online for deals :)

Dyson for sure. They're a little pricier than the other ones, but it's worth the investment.. they last a really long time and do a great job.

I held out for years against getting a Dyson. I just thought it was all hype and Consumer Reports doesn't love them. I had several friends telling me I HAD to get one, but I was like "You just think you love it cause you spent so much money one it ;-)"

Anyway, last Fall my Hoover bit the dust and I ended up getting a factory refurbished Dyson (I couldn't bring myself to spend $500, but for what I was going to pay for another brand I got the refurb)...

I LOVE IT. Not only does it clean noticeably better than any vacuum I've had (pulls the dirt our of the cracks on my wood floor!) but it's also incredibly easy to use. Just a very smart design.

Miele is hands down the best vacuum I've ever owned. I have owned/used Electrolux, Oreck, Hoover. I've never tried a Dyson but am not a fan of the bagless vacuums. My son has allergies to dust mites, and we purchased the Oreck vacuum because of the hepa filter. Absolutely nothing comes out of the back of this vacuum and my house has never been cleaner. Also very light. It is pricey, though.

No complaints with my 6 year old Oreck, love their free yearly tune-ups for the first 5 years!!

....but to be fair, I use my Shop-Vac for all the edges and my stairs!

I can't give you a recommendation for one, but I can tell you what I wouldn't buy anymore. I have a bagless vacuum and in my opinion that's just the most inconvenient thing in the world. It's really gross to empty and clean it. I would never buy another bagless vacuum again.

A RAINBOW is the way to go! You'll never, ever have to buy another vacuum again! My mother has had hers for 30+ years. I've had mine for over 12 and I purchased mine used. It has so many benifits to using it I don't know where to start- bagless (uses water-just flush or dump), never loses suction (air flow), is an air cleaner as well, because it uses water it is a wet vac as well. Setup a demo.

if you have inside pets the hoover p.a.w.s is great. Even though it is mainly for a inside pet household the minutiae it picks up may make it worth having even if you don't have any inside pets.I have been through dysons-we tested the dyson pet vac against the Hoover Wind Tunnel we had at the time. The WT was superior over the dyson animal. However they were not engineered with 5 years of having pets in mind and died after three or four years. However they were workhorses in their time on pet hair, dust, etc.
The best vac I have EVER had they no longer make. If I ever found one and it was engineered similar (one small plastic part took out the whole machine unfortunately) but the design flaw fixed I would buy it. The "Phantom Thunder XT"
If you do not have inside pets I am not sure what I would recommend besides a miele (we are getting one of these eventually-in the meantime I have to go with more of what is in the appliance budget at the moment.) Even the 'cheapest' miele isn't cheap. But they are excellent for dust, etc. German hospitals use mieles due to their triple hepa filtration.
Good luck with whatever you purchase!

I have a Kenmore canister that I like but don't love. my sister has a eureka and loves it - bagless design, she has a dog and the vacuum is run at least 2-3 times per week.

I first bought a Kenmore canister thinking I could buy 2 or 3 for the price of a Dyson, Electrolux, Rainbow etc. I did not work out well.
This fall I took my 30% coupon to Kohl's and got a Dyson on sale...very affordable and I love it! It is a little bulky and there are other styles, but this one fit my budget. It is an upright with canister attachments that I need to use to get under furniture and small places. Suction is great! No bags, wash the filter once a year and reuse! so simple!
My good friend swears by her Rainbow if you can afford the investment!
