Seeking Information on Garland ISD

My husband and I are in the process of buying a house in the Sachse/Wylie/Garland area. Part of Sachse goes to GISD and part goes to Wylie ISD. Any advice or information about each of the school districts would be very helpful in our search.
Thanks in advance!

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your advice and comments. We went out this weekend and looked out both areas and fell in love with a house in Wylie with a great elementary school right down the street. Thanks again!

Hi J.,
I realize you posted this long ago and have probably made decisions by now. None the less, I'd like to toss another option out to you. I am a licensed teacher with 13 years teaching experience. I will be opening a private school out of my home this fall, and hope to move to a seperate facility soon. To begin with, I will take in kids kinder through second grades. I'd love to find a core group to work with at least until high school. I have an ad under Local Business Reviews Academics k-8 with a couple reviews and one under home schooling with another review. The School for Enlightened Learning is very child centered. I offer quality education at prices lower than traditional private schools. Whatever you decide, best of luck!

I went through the GISD school system myself, but that was quite awhile ago. I was sad to hear recently from an old high school teacher how bad South Garland HS has gotten over the years.

When we moved back to Garland I wasn't looking forward to choosing a school for my daughter to attend in the district (GISD has choice of school, so as long as there is room in a given school you can enroll your child, regardless of your proximity to the school). I visited a few & looked at the stats and went with Armstrong, which is located in Sachse. My daughter loves her school & I don't have any major complaints. I like the small-town feel of it, if that makes sense. My daughter is in first grade & has 17 other children in her class. She loves it.

Good luck!

We have lived in Garland for over 20 years....our daughter is in Middle School in Garland (11yrs old).....If you are looking for an elementary school....Abbott is one of the best...Armstrong is not too bad....and Spring Creek Elementary is pretty good, too....those are all in GISD....Armstrong also takes kids from Sachse (I believe).....What school level are you kid(s) in?.....As far as Wylie schools go, don't know too much....We have some friends whose kids go to Dodd Elementary and they are pretty happy with that school.....If you are looking for a private school, Garland Christian Academy and Firewheel Christian Academy (aka: Buckingham North Christian School) are both excellent schools....our daughter went to BNCS from kindergarten through 4th grade.....Anyway, good luck.....I know picking schools is NOT an easy task!!

We moved to Sachse (Wylie ISD side) last year. My son will start at the NEW elementary school that is being built in the fall in kindergarten. When we moved here, schools were our main concern. Wylie Elem schools tend to have better ratings than some of the Garland Elem in the area. So we chose the Wylie ISD area. Also..another thing with Garland schools, is that kids can choose what schools they want to attend, which could cause schools in your area to be full sometimes. Check out www.greatschools.net. This website gives ratings, ratios, test scores, etc on just about any school in any district.

It has been my observation that the schools in Wylie are smaller and have a better ratio of teachers to students. Garland in mostly inter-city and will have larger numbers of students comparied to Wylie. Also I have also noticed that the students have better support as far as studies are concerned at Wylie. I am a staff member at the Collin County Community College and have been able to work with both sets of students from each area. Wylie seems to have a good crowd coming from them comparied to Garland. (This may not help you if you are looking at a private school in Garland)
Good luck!

Hi J.:
I actually taught in GISD for 6 years prior to teaching in Plano ISD for 7. I graduated through PISD and as a teacher had always heard at what a phenomenal district Plano was. It is a good district, but Garland is NOT bad. It is much more in touch with reality and has a handle on diverse populations. I would say that Sachse HS is about as close to homogeneous as you are going to get over there; including Wylie. I will say that after leaving Garland, looking back, I was very impressed with it and found it not to be as "ghetto" as folks make it out to be. I think it has strong leadership and for the most part is very competitive academically. Bottom line is if you want to have a good experience, it is available at any school. If you want to have a negative experience it is at any school as well. I think it will all depend on your willingness to become involved and be supportive of your child. In this metroplex opportunity abounds everywhere. If you are interested in sports or any other UIL activities and that is important to you, you may want to look into the actual DISTRICT that it competes in. I know that Wylie is in a very tough district 9-5A, with a lot of athletic powerhouses. To my knowledge, Sachse is still competing as 4A which may provide more opportunities to have success and be involved in more things. If you have anymore questions, feel free to email me privately.
