Hello:
I have a 13 year old daughter who will be entering high school next year. We are considering homeschooling her. Any information on curriculum, getting started, what to do / what not to do, and local resources in Canton would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I homeschooled 3 kiddos all the way through 12th grade. They are well-adjusted, successful young adults. Our primary resource for support was AAEN (aaengroup.com). Most of their activities are on the north side of the city. Being in Canton, that would not be too far. I also found a website that might be helpful- homeschooling.about.com - and I suggest reading John Holt (especially "Teach Your Own") and John Gatto ("Dumbing Us Down" and more). Enjoy these last few years with your daughter at home. It's a wonderful time in both your lives.

Hi G.!
Welcome to the Homeschool community. There are so many resources out there! This is not an adventure that you have to take alone.
I currently homeschool my 2 kids ages 12 & 15.
There are many places nearby you that offer homeschool classes 1-2 times a week. These are helpful because your student will meet other homeschoolers like themselves and can tune in to all the activities that are offered.
There are a few that I know about in Woodstock which is hopefully not too far for you.
Timothy Ministry- they have classes once a week (Tuesdays) at First Baptist Church in Woodstock - you can probably still get into some classes for the second semester.(If you are starting this year)
Kings Academy - They have classes 1-2 a week and are also located in Woodstock.
There is also Veritas and Living Science which is somewhere over in Woodstock also...I think
Anyway, we do a mixture of both classes outside of the home and inside the home.
For the classes we teach at home my kids really like The Teaching Textbooks math books & cd's. I love them also they are a bit costly but worth every penny!
For History they like Alpha Omega Lifepacs. They are easy to understand and not so wordy that they get bored and they are able to complete each History lesson without a lot of Prep from my side, unless we choose to do one of the extra activites.
Also, it would be a good idea to check out Crown Athletics. This is a homeschool athletic program that offers quite a few
athletic programs for the homeschooler.
Hopefully, I have not overwhelmed you with too much information. Best of Luck!
P.S. - If you deciede to homeschool for high school I highly recommend using a center for Independent study.

Check out the list and find one close to you. They will help you to plan what courses to take, guide you to local homeschool groups and will help you to plan for college: testing needed for college, transcripts, diploma...etc
It may take some time to sort through the list some are set up more as a private school rather than a homeschool/independent study center. When you call them ask if they are an Independent Study Center.

G.,

There is a homeschool group that has several members and activities in the Canton area. Just check out their Yahoo Group ... Creative Home Educators-North Georgia. They are an eclectic group and seem to have several activities for the teens. Good luck!

Hi, I am new to this forum, so if I d something wrong, please forgive me, but we used to homeschool when we lived in MI. I would highly recommend looking into Sonlight Curriculum. It was fantastic when we used it. I would use it again in a heartbeat. Good luck with your decision.
