The area around my granddaughter's anus is sometimes red. The redness comes and goes. Her mom and I have never been concerned. My granddaughter has never shown discomfort. She's now two and this has been happening for some time.

Welcome to mamapedia...okay I'll bite...

if it's blistering? It's most likely diaper rash. If it's red? It could be diaper rash.

If you are concerned? Call your pediatrician and talk with the on-call nurse or doctor about your concerns.

Good luck.

Could be diaper rash. Could be yeast. Could be an allergy. Impossible to know without someone taking a look at it.

I'd use a plain warm cloth for wiping her (no wipes, certain not any with alcohol or fragrance), don't wipe hard, just gently clean (or put her in a tub or rinse with the shower nozzle if you have one on a hose), and no powder at all (increases yeast). You can try Desitin or whatever diaper cream you usually use. If you've been using something all along, try switching to Balmex.

As always, call the pediatrician or the on-call weekend nurse. Maybe she needs to be seen, maybe not. But you'll do better in terms of a response if you report what you've already done and not done.

Also, going forward on Mamapedia, you'll get more responses if you put something more specific in your title - "infant has irritation in diaper area near anus" is more specific than 'seeking help'. Other moms can search for questions that interest them and learn from the responses you get, and you can do the same thing to search for prior questions whose answers may help you. Hope this helps!

i'm betting there are several thousand things that could cause it. rather than asking people on the internet who are not looking at your daughter's anus, ask a doctor who is.

my pedi told me it was a food allergy that may or may not go away with age.
recommended a food journal to keep track of what was eaten and when the bum was red to find the connection.

any time there is strange redness around the anal area, my m.d. husband has me use anti fungal creams on our kids. they usually clear up, and if not, then head to the dr.. I get what your saying, if there is a first line of defense before booking that apt. you want to know.

My husband's nurse practitioner recommended this brand and I love it, because it soothes as well.
