Hello, I have noticed in the last few years that my anxiety has increased. i have sorta self diagnosed myself with GAD (general anxiety disorder) but have never gone to see a physchologist. but the more i read, the more i think i should be talking/ learning from a person trained to help people with GAD. I'm 4 months pregnant and most days my anxiety is fine, but some days its out of control. i worry about everything (down to whether or not i put the garage door down (even though i looked at it down for 10 seconds straigtht!). i stopped drinking last year, so i don't "self medicate" or anything like that. i usually get thru my anxiety by just going on with life. i have never had a depression problem. i'm just frustrated that i am always worrying. it's like i can't turn my head off. i've never been a relaxed person. if anyone has someone they could refer me to, that would be great. i have decent insurance so i'm sure it would be covered. any help would be greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

I definitely recommend starting treatments now because you may have increased anxiety after your baby comes. I have PPD and I wish I had started getting help for it sooner. There is also a great PPD support group that meets weekly in chandler/gilbert - some of the women who attend are currently pregnant. They have a lot of great ideas to help cope with the anxiety. send me a private message if you want more info about those groups.

I saw a great physchiatrist/councelor for a while (for anxiety and depression). Her name is Arial Shcultz and she's located on Broadway and Gilbert area. she really helped me work through a difficult time and had some great suggestions for dealing with what comes with anxiety. Good luck!

Joan Leshner in Ahwatukee. She is a Master Social Work so there is no medical mumbo jumbo. She got me through sooooo much. Including a pregnancy!

There is a wonderful psychologist, Dr Jim Lane in Tempe. I highly recommend him. If he is too far from you, he can recommend someone.

I also recommend you try hypnotherapy. It can be very helpful in replacing anxiety with a sense of calm and peace.

Another modalitiy that could be extremely helpful is Polarity. There is a Polarity Clinic at Southwest Institute of Healing Arts in Tempe on the second Sunday of each month with the very minimal fee of $15. There are therapists also available other days of the week in their clinic, also, but the fee with be a bit more, though still very affordable.

Why not try each of these to see which resonates best with you? Always give each modality at least 3 tries before making a decision.

There are also herbs that can safely assist you in this process of finding calm. Consult with a good herbalist.

I think you will be surprised at how effective any/all of these can be. Blessings to you.

It sounds like OCD. Different members of my family have had this. Talk therapy is really recommended and has worked for us. My daughter described it as "I can't keep my mind off my thoughts." If the therapist you find doesn't help, then find another. It's important that you relate well to your therapist.

I would suggest that along with the other ideas people have given you, you make sure to discuss these issues with your OB. S/He can make suggestions for treatment that may or may not include medications. But it's important that you get this advise from your OB as many doctors with other specialties are less aware of the special issues associated with your pregnancy.

I also have GAD and ended up going on a low dose of medication when I was 29. I realized once I started taking the medication that I must have also been depressed. The change in my mood, anxiety level, and attitude toward my husband was dramatic. I ended up taking this medication through two pregnancies, and I really believe that I would not be as good a mother or wife if I had not gotten treatment. I spent over 10 years trying to tough it out naturally. Now I realize that I wasted several years of my life being anxious about very small issues. I was miserable for no good reason. Address this issue now, before you have your baby. It will make you the best mother you can be. Take care!
