Seeking Funding to Finish My Bachelor's

Hello Ladies,

I am seeking funding to finish my bachelor's degree in Accounting. I have been at it for quite some time. I was going pretty diligent at it for a couple of years. Then I became a single mom. Being a great mom to my 15 year old son has been my first priorty since I found out that I was pregnant. That is going pretty well, but is very expensive. My son will be a sophmore at Bishop Machebeuf High School this year. I am paying more than half of the tuition for that. I receive little (almost none)help from his dad. I am an Accountant, however, I cannot seem to advance as I feel I should. I think finishing my degree will help me move toward that. I am hoping to get back to my degree as soon as I can get some funding. Part of the problem is that I am in limbo as far as my income goes. I make too much and yet not enough. Any advice that you ladies can give me will be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

Hi B.,

Not sure if you could swing this with your schedule, but UPS offers up to $24,000 in tuition reimbursement for their part-time employees. The Commerce City facility would probably offer 3-5 hour shifts, while the DIA facility offers 1-3 hour shifts, both in the early AM or late evening.
I have been working the evening shift at DIA for almost 10 years now and have been working full time at a different job almost as long. I have a 14 year old son, am a single mom and receive little help from his dad as well - so I know where you are at.
It's just a thought - I would suggest you take a look at their website (I googled UPS employment and found their website). I know they are making changes to the hiring policies August 1st - so you may want to check it out soon.

Good Luck,

S.

I am a member of an international women's organization called P.E.O which provides scholarships, grants, and low-interest loans for women of all ages and situations. Each type of aid has different qualifications, but I'm sure you'd fit into one group! Check out our website at www.peointernational.com or contact me personally through mamasource. Take care.

Metro has a good accounting program. You should fill out the fafsa to see if you can get any grants, scholarships or loans. You are not committed to taking the loans, but if you find that you just need to borrow a little to finish your bachelor's degree, it would pay you back 10-fold. Also you could check with Metro's accounting department to see if they offer any scholarships through their office.

Best of luck to you!!

My husband is a recruiter with the National Gaurd. They offer great bonuses, plus tuition assistance. If you are interested let me know and I can put you in touch with him. If it weren't for the military I don't know how we would make ends meet!

As a single mother I can imagine there would be alot of free $ for school. Also, go to Metro, it is the best value by far in town. Just go down to the closest school to you and get the FAFSA ASAP, you could get that in now for fall. I agree, get that degree, it will raise your income level and set a good example for your son. Kids emulate their parents, so if you finish your education then he will be more likely to as well.
I also saw your question about private school tuition. I personally think there are ALOT of excellent public schools in the Metro area and if you are struggling I would be all over that. I know that tuition is a hefty chunk of change. Are you catholic? I understand if that is important to you, but if you think the academics are stronger I encourage you to check out some other options. Also, it would be most important for YOU to finish your education, it will give you and your son a better life, and you need to think about yourself and things like retirement( and really this takes care of him, you don't want to be a burden later!). Your son will be ok as long as you are paying attention!
