I had both of my kids 2nd birthdays at Gymboree play center. A great place for that age. We requested no presents so there was more time for play and cake/juice. Parents stayed and enjoyed watching the kids play.

if his birthday is likely to be during the warm break before Halloween, you might consider a park birthday ... any park with an age-appropriate playground is good. Pull out some bubbles and it's a goodbye to warm weather party! Alternately, if it's cold, there's probably some "hello to Fall" activites (races--to keep warm, making kites out of bunches of dried leaves and some string ... I dunno ... we were lucky last year and it was warm).

Last weekend I hosted a party at Gammans Park in North Portland, where the park structures aren't so great for little little kids (Tall Slide and merry go round especially), but there is a 'bike racetrack' path in the park for them (about 2 feet wide) ... kids with scooters, skates, pushcars, trikes, and bikes, have all spent an hour or so going round and round, mostly not running into each other. Kids 18 mos-8 years old had a pretty great time, and the parents mostly got to sit and talk (and occasionally try to get the 2 years olds to NOT climb the Tall Slide).

As a mom of four, I am a big fan of cheap, kids-entertain-thmeselves ;) parties.

All of that said, the kids' favorite-est place ever ever ever for party is Pump It Up--they have locations around the country now. It's an indoor jump castle facility. We've committed to host one party there for each of our kids when they turn 8 or 9 (we figure that is the height of enjoyment age) ... but littler kids like it too :). (They also rent out for office parties!)

I think Pump It Up Jr near Bethany is really fun and tailored to the 6 and under set.

Pump it Up Jr. is very fun! It's the toddler version of Pump it Up--designed for kids under 5--Cedar Hills and Hwy 26. It's filled with bouncy houses and slides. We did my daughter's second birthday party there and it was great. The kids can run around and play and you can just let them go. The staff also sets up the snacks or cake while the kids are playing, so you don't have to worry about that either. They'll sell you cake and pizza if you want, too. I haven't had the pizza (I think it's Pizza Schmizza), but the cake wasn't very good, so I'd definitely recommend getting cake elsewhere.
