Seeking Experienced Homeschool Mom's.

I am in the research phase of my homeschooling as we are only 6 months from a new school year beginning. I have 3 starter books to help me figure out my children's learning styles, what curriculum are ideal for them and tips for getting started. My twins are finishing public elementary school this year. I have been mostly satisfied with the years they spent in CCISD. I am looking for other nearby mom's interested in giving their children the best home education. Preferrably with students going into 6th grade and/or pre-k. This will be my first year, so I need to pair up with some experienced mothers. All tips and advice welcome, too. Thanks!! :o)

What can I do next?

switched on schoolhouse is computer based and interesting you might could try that out. Also there is a homeschool store on Judyway in Houston, go look at what they offer, my approach was going and browsing because many of the things offered are boring (not colorful or exciting. Take your kids with you also and get their opinions. Mine are 14 and 11 and keeping them interested is HUGE in their success.

Hi S.,

We started just this past August with our 11yr old son after a summer "trial" run. Are you anywhere near Pearland? There is a Homeschool Alliance that meets once a week that my son just really loves. He takes an art & a "hands on" science, plus a couple of other classes. This one day make it so I don't get burned out. It's cheaper than even a mom's day out program plus he's learning. I schedule hair appt., dental appts. or lunch w/ a friend on that day he meets.

What type of cleaning up of your diets are you considering? I found certain foods made our kids very hyper & unfocused. Also, there are fruit & veggie co-ops that make produce much more affordable.

With this being our 1st year, I've got a bit of this and that as far as circiculum. I've started with the Saxon Math. It's pretty good, and actually what his teacher was using in 5th grade public school. It has alot of word problems (not his strong suit) so I might switch to a Math u See for summer as a try-it-out sort of thing.

We could go to the park on 2351 (Frankie Carter)sometime and let the boys play & us have a good mom visit! I'm so glad we're doing this, it's been so much less stress on him & he seems to be getting things better!

S.,

I pulled our 12yr. old son out of public school 6wks ago to begin homeschooling him. My husbands job over the past 10yrs. has had us on the move from one place to another after only a year or two in each place. Finally we are at a place in his job were we never "have to" move again. However out 12yr. ADHD, son has really suffered over the years. We took a child that needed major stability and routins and turned him upside down moving him from school to school all around Texas. Last year in 5th grade is when we really stared noticing him strugle in math, and this year in 6th he has failed the first three six weeks, while his other classes were really great grades. We got tutors, saught help through the school, went to counseling, everything we could thing of from the beining of the year to try and help him. Finaly after having him tested to see just were it was he was getting lost, we found out that is was fouth grade math. During one of our many moves he missed out on some major lessons and fell behind from there. Noone we spoke with was willing to "back track" to help him check up, no school offical, no private school, no motasory school, noone. And after all it was our fault not the school. I blame noone but myself. And all I wanted was for our son to suceed. So me being a "stay at home mom" begain the research for homeschooling, always thinking "I can't do that". But once I got stared, I realized just how awsome it really is. It has only been six weeks and our son is suceeding. He is so confident about math right now. Makeing great grades has reastablished his since of "Yes I can do this", "I get it now". And I wish I would have done it years ago. We are useing Alpha and Omega 6th grade curriculam for everything but Math. For Math we are useing Math-U-See. It has been what has helped him understand the best. We also have a 14yr. old daughter in the 8th grade. She is in all pre-AP classes and makes excellent grades and does not want to be pulled out of school for any reason. She loves going to public school, and for now that is okay with us....but I really do wish she would change her mind. Homeschool is so wonderful. Good luck I'm sure you will find the one that is best for your family.

Hi S., we have been homeschooling for 20 years now! If I liked parties, I would have thrown myself one! We live in Round Rock, though, a little far from Houston to meet up for park days. I know there is a support group near you. Start with Texas Home School Coalition, and do a web search of home school support groups, Houston. If you have any specific questions, I'd be glad to try to answer. If this is what God is calling you to do, you will be AMAZED at the blessings in store for you!

I will be using the ABeka christian homeschool program with my children next year. They also offer DVD's that are basically like a telecourse class one would take in highschool or college. They offer suggestions for if you are homeschooling more than one child as well. You can get more info at www.abeka.org
