Seeking Dermatologist for Speedy Appointment

I think I need a dermatologist - my 19 yr old son has a huge lump on his eyeball. Of course we first thought it was acne but then after deciding it wasn't acne or a staph infection because it didn't have a head or drain, we thought it was a bug bite. It was over 10 days so I took him to our general practitioner. He told us it was staph and should be drained but since my son didn't want him to go near his eye with a needle or scalpel, he sent us home with 10 days of antibiotic and told us to call if he was still alive. I think he was trying to get my son to realize it was serious. My son has been ill all weekend (he knows this is serious) and the eye is looking awful. It is purple and varied colors and the size of a golf ball on his eyelid. We want to get advice from a specialist. I'm not convinced it's staph but we don't know what it is. Any suggestions on a good Dr. to get in to to see quickly. I think we need a new general practitioner as well - one who works well with teens and young adults. We live in Allen, so anywhere near would be great.
Thanks Mom's!

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for your feedback. I got my son in to see Dr. Warthan, a dermatologist in McKinney that was recommended. We were able to get in the next morning. She was awesome with him. It was an abscess and it needed to be drained. He hates needles and the idea of an incision was even worse but she worked well with him and he was very brave. The eye is already looking so much better and we can tell that even though he is in a lot of pain, he feels a whole lot better having it taken care of.

Hi J.,

A dermatologist would likely refer you to an ophthalmoIogist for treatment. I work in the ophthalmology field as a technician (30 yrs!) and what you are describing to me sounds like a clogged gland in the lid. Not serious, just ugly. It's called a chalazion and the treatment is warm compressing 3-4 times a day for a wk or 2 to encourage this to drain on its own. If it doesn't, we incise them and drain them as an office procedure. Using a local injection to numb the lid, the whole process takes about 10 minutes.

Hope I've helped!

Since it is near his eye I would get him in somewhere as soon as possible even going to the ER if that is your only option. With that being said the other question you had was to find a new general practitioner that works well with teens and young adults. My children range from 16 - 22 two girls and a boy. They all go to Dr. Sander Gothard at Village health care partners. 5425 W. Spring Creek Parkway
Plano, tx
Suite 200
Plano, Texas 75024
P ###-###-####
they have also seen other doctors in the practice
Dr. Elaine Timm, Dr. John Moon, III which they liked but they all like gothard the best. My 22 year old is very picky about doctors and she is very comfortable with gothard. they have a website. https://secure.villagehealthpartners.com/portal/default.aspx

If it were me and it is the size of a golf ball, I would head to the closest emergecy room ASAP. They have all the equipment to exam it and determine exactly what it is. They can also peform a surgery on it (day surgery if that is all that's required). Especially if he is feeling ill. As a mom I would not hesitate to take him in ASAP...insurance or not!!!!

My husband had this happen to him. The only solution was to have it cut off. He went to an eye doctor- David Gregory at Baylor medical center in Las Callinas at 635 and George Bush. He really liked him-- It took two seconds and the thing was gone. My husband lived with that for months! My husband even had is drained but that didn't help and finally they cut it off can he had three stitches by his eye.

you really need to call him today!
good luck
J.
