My new god-daughter was just born yesterday and I want to think of something really special and unique to give her on the christening day. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas.

Thanks!

What about a personalized blanket or maybe .. well since she is so little she wont really know until she is older but you can go online and buy her a star that is named after her and it will say where it is and everything. depending on what package you get you can get a plaque, frame whatever but i think that would be really neat!!! Here is a couple places to look at just in case..I think they range from $20 on up so its not that bad...

My husband wrote a beautiful poem for our god daughter, you can find one I'm sure that means a lot and have it printed on really nice paper and frame it. They have it hanging in her room. I know that her mother really liked it. I also made a baby blanket for her with her name, birth date, weight, time she was born, the first line of the poem my husband wrote and her baptism day on it. I'm sure you can find someone to make a blanket if that sounds interesting. I tried to think of things that would be usable but still very personal, that no one else would have. Just what we did..

For a baby's birth, we always give a US Mint proof set for the year of their birth. It's something that has significant meaning (and will hold/improve in value).

For Baptism, a child's rosary - given in advance to be blessed during the ceremony. We gift the rosary because we already gave the proof set - I don't see any reason why you couldn't give a US Mint proof set for the christening.

How about a noahs ark or angel night light. A money CD for when they get older? A book of hand written wishes from you for their life?

Hope that helps,

Check out www.vidascollectibles.com. Go to the products section and look at the baptismal crosses or baby booties.

I know the woman who hand-paints the porcelain-they are really beautiful and create a keepsake! Everyone that I have given the crosses or booties to just loves them.

Good luck! C. M

Here is what I think is something that is really special and something that no one else will give to the child. Go to the following website http://www.paulsadowski.com/birthday.asp
You can get all kinds of information on the date of birth, including but not limited to moon phase, birth stone, astrology stuff and much, much more. I print it all on either parchment or linen paper, roll it into scroll form, and tie it with ribbon. I have even given this to adults as birthday gifts. It is something really unique.

If you live anywhere near Frodtert in Milwaukee, try going to NPH Bookstore. It's a Christian store and whenever I go in there I nearly cry over all the baby stuff. It's off Watertown Plank Road. That's what I would try.

I don't think this is necessarily "special" enough, but my son received 2 things that we really liked: One is a small cross (maybe 8 inches tall) and in the center is a little boy kneeling in prayer and it hangs on the wall near his crib. The second thing is a board book with a music CD called "First steps to God" and we read that book a lot- he loves it!

Congratualtions! You are and will be very important in this child's life. Your job as a God-parent is to be a good Christian example in the child's life. I chose to give my God-children their first Bible. I wrote the date and a nice message for them. As they grow older I hope to give them Bibles for each stage of their life (baby, toddler, preschool, adolescent, youth, young adult, etc.). It is important that they have this wonderful book and they are able to read and understand it more and more as they grow.

If you crochet or knit or know someone who does, you could have her baptismal gown made. My 'adoptive' mom made the one for her granddaughter and I know the parents really appreciated that. One of the best things that we received was a poem my mom had written for my baby while I was pregnant. She had it printed on nice paper and framed it. I have it hanging near her bed.

I know she's little, but what about an engraved Bible? Or offer to have her Christening gown professionally framed so they can hang it in her room.

For significant occasions in a special person's life I like to try to give gifts that they can keep for a long time to remind them of that day. I would suggest a bracelet or necklace, which is something that she can enjoy occasionally as a child and will also treasure as an adult.

They do make very adorable children's jewelry and I still have an engraved silver bracelet that I was given as a child. Of course I can no longer wear it, but it is a nice memento. You could also look for a locket, cross necklace or another pendant of special significance to you that can transition from a small chain for a child to a longer chain when she's older. You don't have to get anything terribly expensive, but you do want something that will hold up to several years of wear. I will say that I was completely enamored of the "real" diamond in a locket that I was given as a child, even though it was only a tiny speck I thought it was the most fabulous thing! I was given a few pieces of jewelry as a child; my mother would let me wear them on "special occasions" and I can still wear them today.

Another idea is to start a charm bracelet and give her a charm every year on her birthday.

I think a keepsake item would be nice. For instance, a nice little bracelet that she could keep and then use for her own daughters. A nice blanket. You can get ones that have their name and christening date embroidered on it. You could also get her a little scrapbook that you can put pictures and things about the special day. Even a nice frame with a picture of her and the church she is to be christened at.
