Hello! I am at my wits end with my current pediatrician!!! I have a 13 y/o son who he says is obese and a 4 y/o daughter who he accuses me of not feeding (she weighs 26 lbs). My entire family eats healthy food (but not obsessively) and all are healthy. I would like to find someone who is understanding and not critical. I refuse to put butter and heavy cream in my 4 y/o's food just so she can gain weight, and have a heart condition by the time she is 10! any suggestions would be welcome.

What can I do next?

HI S.- We live in Waltham, but our pediatrician, whom I love, is in Natick. It takes about 20 min. to drive there out route 30. His name is Dr. Michael McKenzie. He and his wife ( nurse practitioner) run Family Rhythms. Not only does he do pediatric medicine, but also helps families with problems that they may be experiencing (like disobedient teenagers, or setting limits with 3 year olds). He's very straight-forward, very well informed, and practices medicine that considers how the illness may be treated in other ways, rather than the traditional "western medicine"approach. He and his wife are also very involved in proper nutrition and vitamins. His number is ###-###-####. He's been our pediatrician since my twins were born 9.5 years ago, and I trust him thoroughly. Good luck with whomever you end up with!

Hello,
I definitely think if you do not feel supported by your doctor then you should find another. Unfortunately I don't live in your area so I don't have any suggestions o other pediatricians. I did want to comment though, that 26lbs is very small for a four year old, and though I have no idea on her growth history (she may be perfectly healthy and on track) it never hurts to see a specialist. She could have a metabolic disorder, or a protein/gluten/ or some other kind of food intolerance that is causing malabsorption of nutrients.
Take Care and good luck in your search,
C.

Oh boy, can I commiserate. My son is 15 months and he's probably just about 20 lbs. I used to feel so guilty when moms would stroll up with their 30 lb., 6 month olds and compare their weights. Failure to thrive and grossly underweight gave me nightmares for months. I had nutritional consult after nutritional consult. My pedi even told me to let him suck on a sparerib. Hmmm hmmm. Finally I took back control. I don't have a medical degree, but I think I know my child better than anyone. I stopped stressing, and he started eating...a little more. *_* He is healthy, rambunctious, curious, growing steadily (upwards) and he eats when he is hungry. I always leave things out for him to graze on...diced apples, wheat crackers, pudding, etc., etc. I have a small child, and I am not going to spread cream cheese on his cheerios...anymore.
Best of luck to you!

That is ridiculous!

We go to MGH West and see Dr. Stephen Nishiyama there. He's understanding and far from critical. We love him!

Good luck!

Both my husband AND my 6-month old daughter go to Waltham Family Medicine, where they see Dr. Geoffrey Burns. We love him. He is very relaxed and compassionate and not in the least bit judgmental about anything. He's located within the Children's Hospital complex and is affiliated w/ Newton Wellesley Hospital. We've been very pleased with him over the last six months.
