I have a toddler grandchild and she has difficulty in speaking words. Is she just delayed or does/will she have a speech disablility.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, she has seen a few speech therapist, enrolled in early intervention, was tested a few times for autism and turned out negative and now is enrolled in pre-school for special needs. She makes some progress by repeating words and singing along with few words and lots of baby talk. I still believe it is a speech delay

greetings J.,
i am a social worker for children who have disabilities here in Northern California. i work with speech pathologist on a daily basis. My advice is to have your toddler grandchild referred by a pediatrician to seek a professional speech assessment & evaluation. This assessment will determine the level of speech for your grandchild. Starting a speech therapy program or any other developmental delay program (especially in early years of development) will assist your grandchild with outstanding results. hope this helps, D.

First of all, have you spoken to her parents regarding her
speech? Maybe, you can advice her parents to seek medical
assistance (Speech & Hearing) for your grandchild.

I have a 26 month old son that didn't start talking until he was 16 months old. At 12 months old he can only say two words, "ma" for mom and "mmm" for everything else. He mostly used his hands and facial expressions to express himself. I seriously thought that he had some kind of disability however, by age 16 months I started taking him to friends' house with kids that could talk and also to the churche's nursery and suddenly there he started making 2-3 word sentences. By age 24 months, he could express himself with ease. The words came out accurate, no baby words at all.

I hope your g-child is just delayed like mine was. Good Luck!
