Hi! I have a 2 year old little boy, Kaleb, and I am ready to start potty training and I think he is too. He tells me when he has used the bathroom, so I felt it was time to start training. I am new at this and have no idea what I am doing. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

Wow if he is telling you when he has to go sounds like you already have half of the game won!!!!! Get him a little potty or use the big one if you want. I suggest taking him once an hour or so. Problem is they get to playing and forget. Don't ever rush him or let anyone scare him about the potty. Good luck sounds like your doing great

There are lots of different ways to go about potty training. It's great that he tells you when he has gone. I have three boys, 4, 2, and 8 months. My four year old started training just before he turned two. He was really into it, then stopped. He is finally doing it consistantly, although he does still have an occasional accident, sometimes.

We used a potty chair with him in the beginning. He seemed to like it. But he did better once we put him on the big potty. He would sit on it (kind of like a girl would) and go.

My two year old is still in diapers, but does use the potty sometimes. I really thought he'd be doing better since he likes to do everything his big brother does.

We used a sticker chart for a while. I taped a piece of paper on the mirror in the bathroom, with rows and columns. Everytime they used the potty and washed their hands, they put a sticker in a square. We also did little treats. (We still use them now) After they finish, and wash hands, they get two gummy bears. (We started with, three, and just went down to two)

Whatever you do, don't pressure him, and don't get mad if he takes a long time to go. Sometimes I think I rushed my oldest too much, and maybe that's why he stopped going. It can be very frustrating to potty train when you have another little one around that also needs attention! Ask him if he has to go, and occasionally put him on the potty. Some kids like to be left alone, some don't. It takes a lot of trial and error. Good luck to you. I have often heard that boys take a lot longer than girls. But once he is really ready, it shouldn't take long!

Best of luck!
G.

Hello there. I thought I'd add my 2 cents about potty training. I have a daughter who'll be 4 on Christmas. She's been potty trained since she was almost 3. We got her a potty for her 2nd birthday. I was pregnant with her little brother who is 19 months. She showed interest for a little while, but the little potty soon became her favorite seat. I tried Kandoo and all sorts of 'props' to intice her to the potty. Finally, when her little brother started eating meat and she was eating adult food (which as you know REALLY smells bad upon exiting their bodies) I started gagging when I'd have to change her soiled (poopie) diapers. So, I decided that she was GOING to get potty trained. I stooped to bribery. I promised her a "potty present" if she'd just go to the potty like a big girl. Luckily, there was this little play house at TRU that she had been pitching fits over for months. So, it was decided. IF she went to the potty when she needed to, and when she went for 1 whole week without an "accident" she could have it. Much to my surprise, the 2nd week.. Actually within 13 days, she'd gone 7 w/o an accident and has been going like a big girl ever since. In addition to the bribe, I purchased those plastic pants and big girl panties and simply said, NO MORE DIAPERS, you're a big girl now. I'm guessing that plastic & wet diaper combo was QUITE unpleasant. But, that's what worked for her... We'll see about baby brother soon.
