My 7 year old daughter has been diagnose with Epstein Barr. I know it is the virus that causes mono. But this is not something that goes away, It has affected her immune system so she gets ill easily. It is a relief to know now since she has been ill so often. Her doctor said to try to keep her from being exposed to illnesses. (Impossible with school.) Also to make sure she gets plenty of rest. One problem I am having is with school. She has had to attend some days of summer school due to too many absences. She makes A-B honor roll and always turns in her makeup work. I know she misses some learning experiences when she can't be at school. But she stays on level with her class. The school officials know about her diagnosis but do not seem to want to work anything out except extra days "to make up what she missed." I am told it is because of state regulations.Has anyone been through this or have any suggestions?

What can I do next?

We also use Juice Plus in our family. I think it is one of the best things that we have done with our health. My daughter had a bllod disease and they even thought that she had leukemia at once. After that I sought advice from natural doctors and nutritionist and one thing that they all advised was Juice Plus. There are other things that we are doing as well to help build her immune system as well. Please feel free to private message me and I would be happy to talk to you about it. I am so sorry that you are going through this.

You need to make sure your school officials really know what's going on including taking them the documentation from the doctor. I'm not just talking about her teacher, I mean the principal and attendance/PEIMS clerk. If this is a true diagnoses you qualify for special "modifications" that the school can not deny you - doesn't mean they are going to offer the information, you have to demand it. I don't know anything about the illness but if it is something that eventually can be resolved you may want to check into a homebound program, doesn't sound like you would have the time to do home-schooling yourself with 7 kids but the school may offer something. Set up an appointment with the principal and if that doesn't work keep going up the ladder until someone gives you what you need. Everyones goal should be the same, get her a good education.

M.,

I just re-read your message (I sent you a PM), and first I want to say - what great people you and your husband are! God bless you both.

About the school situation - you might check with an attorney to see if EBV would be protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act. I don't know if that helps, but it might be worth checking out. Visit dallasbar.com to find an inexpensive, possibly free way to get some advice.

Best of luck!

I have also been diagnosed with EB. From what I read, 95% of all Americans have it by the time they are 5 years old. I was going to a specialist in Houston, TX before we moved here to AC. She gave me some shots for awhile, and also some herbal supplements and told me to eat a high protein diet. But when I moved to this area I found a doctor in Wichita Falls who has helped me not only with EB but also with several other health issues. Her name is Dr. Donna Smith. Her office is on Kemp St. next to the Girl Scout building. Her phone number is ###-###-####. She would welcome your call. Just tell her that Beverly in Archer City gave you her name and phone number.

I don't think you can get around summer school. You can choose to home school next year if you want, but honestly lots of people have Epstien Barr.... so I don't think the school is going to make any accomodations.

Also, I have a child with autism, so you need to put her disability into perspective. Though challenging, her issue is much better than some.

There are plenty of people with EB... really... so I'd find support groups out there that can give you ideas for the future.

I'd also figure out the school system excused absence requirements and make sure you stay within those guidelines. Being absent with a note from you, doesn't really count, but a note from the doctor does. She can still only have so many from a dr. but if you can go back and provide some notes from the dr. on days she was sick then I'd go for it.

Also, try supplements, like Juice Plus and Colostrum.... I'd asked mamasource a while back about boosting immune health for my son and got lots of ideas. I'm using the JP right now and so far he seems to be doing a little better at avoiding illness.

Good luck!
