Hi mommies!! HELP!!! You know those drains that are on the floor in basements...? I need advice on why my male cat is peeing on one of them. He gets the rug too because it partially covers the drain/lid. Is it the smell of the drain? How do i stop this? Thanks in advance for your help!!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

SOOOOOO sorry this took so long, but thanks so very much to the ladies who responded. I took Oscar to the vet and they ruled out any medical problems; they said it's behavioral. He is very stressed out because of my other cat torturing him and my 3 yr old chasing him all the time. If he continues to stress out, the doc wants to put him on Valium (sp.). Thanks again mommies!!

Take him to the vet first to rule out anything medical. Second, to discourage the peeing, put kitty's litterbox where the drain is and over a series of days/weeks, slowly start to move the box back to it's desired location. Also, think about reasons why he might be acting inappropriately (new litter/person/pet/did you move furniture). Cats are creatures of habit and anything new or changed could trigger this. Also, I would get a plastic mat and cover the drain so the pee is easier to clean up in case he goes there again.

Take him to the vet right away to make sure he doesn't have an infection. My male cat started peeing in our bathtub and it turned out that he had an infection which led to bladder stones and he needed major surgery. Don't hold off on taking him in. The doctors told me that they seek out other places to urinate because they start to associate the litter box with the pain they feel when they go in there.

unfortunetly i dont think this is going to be what you want to hear but...my sisters cat did something very similaur, she would pee on the same spot in their dining room over and over again. at first they couldnt fiure out y they took her to the vet and had her tested for different illnesses, ended up the cat was angry or lonely and was trying to get attention, because they found nothing wrong with her. my sister gave her away to an older lady and she has had no problems since. try covering the drain so she cant get to the spot, and see if she chooses somewhere else to pee. if she does its probably behavioral (sp?) and not the spot its self that is causing her to pee on the floor. my sisters cat started acting up after they got a dog. has something changed for your cat?? good luck with your cat, hope it works out for you!

Like another post said first rule out something medical with your kitty :)

Then clean the area using white vinegar. Rinse with plain water-Cats hate the smell of vinegar! It will neutralize the odor and keep him from using his new litter box.

Good Luck
