a toddler bed is the same length as the crib and uses the same matress. I suggest you get a twin bed it will be more comfortable and last longer.
Next year we will have another child and will need to move my son into another room in our condo down at shore with his grandparents in the summer. We are tight on space. Currently he stays in the room with us but we don't want him to wake up when the baby cries. He is currently in a full size bed at home. I know toddler beds are smaller but will he be able to stay in this bed until he's about 5 or 6? I would think he would need something bigger. Any ideas on a small bed for a preschooler? We just don't think we can fit a twin and don't want to use an airbed or sleepingbag.

A twin bed at least.
What do you mean your son is moving into another room "down at shore" with his Grandparents?
Joy,
I would go with the advice of the mothers who recommended checking with Ikea for smaller beds between toddler and twin size. My son went from our bed to a toddler bed and it was really rough. They use crib mattresses and my son always complained about the bed being uncomfortable. Since your son is also in a full sized bed at home, he may have the same issue.
My kids' toddler bed says that it works until 5y. So unless your child is on the heavy side, as long as you get a good mattress, a toddler bed should work okay.
With my 5 about age 5 is when they grew out but it depends on how tall your child is. Another idea is to start with an inexpensive metal toddler bed as the plastic ones do take up more room, and when he's a bit older you could get a loft bed. It's like a bunk bed with a bed on top but not on the bottom, so the lower area can be used to put the dresser, toy box, play area, etc. Gives more floor space.

If you can't fit a twin, then you'll have to try a crib mattress size. I got my son a really nice toddler bed but it lasted about 10 minutes because he rolls around so much in his sleep. He did okay with a twin bed until he was about 4. He has his own queen size bed and rolls around every single inch of it. That's just the way he rolls! :)
Since it's not a "home" thing, your son might do fine with something smaller. My son loves to go camping and ironically can sleep on a tiny cot while we're there.
Get what you can get and hopefully he will just get used to the difference in sleeping arrangements.
Best wishes!
Check out Ikea! They have some awesome daybeds that may be a good size! (affordable too!) Good luck!
My 5 and a half year old is still in his toddler bed, more space to play in his room. Will your son still fit at age 6? not if he's big for his age. My son is in the 25th percentile for height and has plenty of room to grow and still fit in his bed
Try IKEA. They may have the perfect solution for you. They sell beds with mattresses that are between the size of a crib mattress and a twin mattress. The entire bed and frame is fairly low to the ground, comes with a guard rail and is quite reasonably priced--perfect for a little guy down the shore. We purchased one for our son when he was about 2 1/2. He is four now. He has slept on it just about every night for about two years and it is still in perfect condition. He's a tall boy and I still think he will fit in this bed comfortably until he is at least five or six.
The bed comes in different colors and designs. The one we got for our son is a clear laquered pine with brightly colored animal cut outs in the headboard. Another plus, you can also purchase cute, brightly colored bedding that fits the bed perfectly. This is important to know since crib sheets do not fit on this bed.
Good luck in your search.
I was confused as well...do you mean you stay at the shore all summer and then go back to your regular house? If it's just for the summer, a toddler bed will probably be fine. I know it's still a long time, but it's not forever and if the house his small he'll just have to adjust. Also, I'd like to add that I don't know when the baby will be born, but your son will probably learn to sleep right through it. It took my daughter a few weeks, maybe a month or so, but she very rarely wakes up if her brother cries, day or night. She was a very light sleeper too, but now it doesn't wake her, so if your room is big enough you may consider keeping both the kids with you.
Ikea has great kids beds for when you are short on space. They are bigger then a toddler bed but not as big as a twin. They are inexpensive too. My nephew got this one when he was 4 http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S39858939 and at age 6 is still sleeping comfortably in it.
Ikea has small, toddler-type beds that convert to twin beds when the kids outgrow it. Then even sell mattresses that convert from the small size, to a complete twin size. Definitely your best option, because you can use the small bed as long as he fits in it, then simply convert the bed to a twin when you have to. No additional investment.

The loft bed is a good idea too, as far as saving space. Ikea has lots of them, too.
