My daughter who is 8.5 years old came to me with slight discomfort in one breast and noticed a large pea size lump behind her nipple. This nipple is slightly larger now than the other. Is this normal puberty or should I be very concerned. I allready have a call in to her peds but would like some advice, thank you in advance and please do not leave bad comments.

What can I do next?

This happened to my son! I don't remember what age he was, I think around 9-10. It was puberty kicking in. He was very self-conscious about it and wore a Band-Aid over his nipple until it went away which cracked me up - better a Band-Aid rectangular bulge than a swollen/lumpy nipple bulge! His reasoning was if his shirt came up somehow and a classmate noticed, he could make up a wild story like a bear ripped my nipple off. My offering of why not say a bee stung you wasn't manly enough! His doctor should be a standup comedian - the two of them had quite the time thinking up "excuses"!

Take her to the doctor and find out what it is.

8.5 years old is early for puberty. I suggest that you make an appointment for a check up with her pediatrician.

Probably puberty BUT, I would have her at the pedi office STAT just to make sure.

Don't make a huge deal of your concern in front of her, she doesn't need that extra stress, just get it checked out ASAP for the peace of mind for everyone.

I would have her checked especially since it is only on one side. My son actually had something similiar and it did go away on it's own but we did have it checked first.

Probably just puberty.

If, for your own peace of mind, you decide to take her in for a check up, please do not tell her in advance that you are concerned something might be wrong. There is no sense in her getting upset and stressed and scared, over something that is very likely NOTHING. You can just let her know that she seems to be beginning the early stages of puberty and it is wise to check in with the doctor to make sure things are on track.
No need at all, to upset and worry her over this, Mama.

Thanks mamas for some quick responses. Is there anything else to be watching for since this is probably the start of puberty?

Mamas thank you for all the feedback. All is good and it is completely normal (breast budding)

This is not too early for puberty.

You may see some hairs under her arms. She may go through a huge growing spurt.. She will need more sleep, will have a larger appetite and will need a lot more exercise.

If you have not already begun talking about the changes that could hapen in her body, start sooner than later.
