I am looking for an Elementary school 20 miles from Castle Rock and 20 miles from Thornton. So I feel as though the 1/2 way point is around the Denver Police Dept off of I-25 and Evans? I think. This is a court case and I'm looking for information before Sunday the 14th. The parents have 50/50 custody 1 week a piece and it is an emotional issue for the child having to be driven to school and back home 1 hr each way. The mother has moved and the child will now be going to another school and the mother thinks it is ok for the father to drive the child to school as she takes her to daycare and they do the rest. So What I am looking for is a great school in that area that can be suggested to the judge as an option. And any information as far as teacher/student ratio and test scores would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

greatschools.org is a good website to do research on schools in your area. You can type in the zipcode and a list of schools will pop up in that area then you can compare them. There are parent reviews, parent ratings, and ccap ratings. Good luck!

I have the perfect school - Cory Elementary is at Florida and Steele - which is a minute from that police station at Univ just south of Florida. Cory is ranked excellent and is a K-5 school and Merrill is the 6-8 middle school at the attached campus. both my kids attended Cory and it is a fabulous school. it is a DPS gifted and talented magnet school, and the GT kids are integrated into the regular classes, so all the teachers are trained in best practices teaching techniques. really wonderful school.

the issue is if neither parent lives in Denver, you have to request an out-of-district transfer and if the school is full, which Cory often is, you are put on a waiting list. no guarantee you can get in.

University Park Elementary is just a few minutes south of that police station and is also a very good k-5 elementary. Again you have to deal with a waiting list for an out-of-district transfer and no guarantee of admission.

I am not positive but I think the child has to go to school where the taxes are paid. I have never heard of children going to school outside of counties they live in. Might want to check with your local website first before finding a school. Again, I am just guessing here.

Check out http://SchoolChoiceForKids.org. You can go here http://www.schoolchoiceforkids.org/searchtool.html and type in your address and find all public schools in the area. It will also list if those schools have a particular focus (math, science, art, etc.).

I would also highly recommend visiting the schools you are deciding between. There are lists of questions to ask during your visit here: http://www.schoolchoiceforkids.org/english.php?ID=88

The site also has a lot of information on open enrollment (enrolling in a school other than your neighborhood school).

I hope that helps!
