I am the mother of 3. My middle child, who is 6 and a boy has had anxiety issues in the pst but they are becoming worse. He was first anxious over a gal that he had a crush on from the gym.It was cute at first but turned into him getting sick to his stomache when he knew she was in the gym adn we had to go in.(I am a personal trainer and Instructor... so I have to be there to work). That was getting better... now he gets anxious about the weather... again to the point he gets sick to his stomache. It breaks my heart not being able to help him threw these episodes. The school counslers(sp) are very helpful but feel he needs outside help. I am frustrated with the therapist I have called to get initial appointments with so far... talking to them has been trying... can't get them on the phone. I am wondering if anyone has dealt with anxiety with their children and found as therapist they would reccomend. Or any other means that have worked.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for your responses.... I have since spoken to my sons PC and felt that he needed an anti-anxiety med, which we started right away. We are also seeing a therapist in Framingham Tuesday. I love having this site to help!!

hi P., my son is 11 and has adhd, bi-polar, odd severe anxiety and the list goes on and on. he sees advocates. i love the dr he sees there but i do not like the therapist for a personal reason, but i would def recomend advocates to anyone for children and adults! good luck
ps i just wanted you to know that we were very nervous and some what against medicating him at first, but when we finally put the trust in his dr and just did, it was the beat thing for my whole family that we ever made. :)

I am not sure where you live; you can call NASW and ask about their therapist finder - they will help you find someone in your area who accepts your insurance. You may be able to get a few names; you should have a good feeling about where you will be taking your son.

good luck! And - congrats on getting your son the help he needs!
Warmly,
E.

Hi P.,
I highly recommend Dr. Mort Birnbaum in Sudbury. He is very competent, kind and perceptive. Whomever you go to, it's often a good idea to have both parents and child see the therapist at first (together or separate), since it's the tips the therapist give to the parents that often make all the difference.

I checked in with Bill Fisher (Fischer?) in Framingham (sorry, I don't have the number right now) about my daughter who had some serious social anxiety. A couple of pointers really helped us out, and I think he would be good with the kids directly. He's right on Edgel Road in Framingham, so not too far from you. Good luck. I know that this can be really hard on everyone.
