Seeking a Birth Doula near Homewood

Hi,
It is my first pregnancy and I am hoping to find a good, supportive coach to help me through what I hope will be a natural labor. My husband (bless his heart) is not the 'caring' type and will probably need just as much support as I will, this being our first. I'm new to Birmingham and won't have any support outside of my husband by the time the baby comes, so I'm looking for a kind, 'motherly' but knowledgeable person to help me through this exciting event! Anyone have suggestions on a good doula?

What can I do next?

I applaude any woman for making tough decisions however, personally for the 1st baby, I would strongly recommend an epidural so you won't be uncomfortable for what could be hours. If any delivery is going to be more difficult, it will be your 1st. Each baby is easier to deliver .. it's like your body knows what to do the next times around. An epidudral stops the pain of contractions but you can still "feel" to push and you will feel the baby as it is delivered. It's not like you are completely numb. I was scared to death of the film and needles showing how an epidural was administered. I didn't watch but knew this was something I wanted to do. I have had several babies and my doctor has always been very comfortable in encouraging his patients to have the epidural and relax until it's time to begin pushing. You will be able to visit with your husband and watch the contractions on the monitor instead of having to hurt during them. I didn't get my 1st epidural until after the contractions had been going for a bit and luckily I was not dialated too far to receive it ... I'm pretty tough and I was SO glad to see that nurse come through the door when she did. It was immediate and very appreciated relief. I ended up having a long and difficult delivery with that baby (not the others). I never regretted my decision for the epidural. Just wanted to share my thoughts with you on this and congratulate you on your upcoming baby .. whatever you choose will be a blessing in the end when you hold that little baby in your arms!!

I know your request was a couple of months ago, but gooogle the Alabama birth coalition. they also have a yahoo group you will find very helpful. there is a group that meets monthly in Shelby Co and downtown called Birth Stories. here is a link to the site, it is a local doula who runs them and she has a wealth of info on the site..
